First Set Visit to the New 'Friday the 13th'

I'm not going to pretend to care that much about the upcoming Friday the 13th remockery currently in production. After all, it's not really a remake because if you remember the first film, Mrs. Voorhees was the killer right up until the end, and she's not in this one.

Also, Jason was but a wee mutant then, hardly the strapping, indomitable figure he'd become in later films. In this one, he's sporting the mask, all right, and he's a full grown dude.

Another reason I can't spend too much of my time worrying about is the overwhelming probability that, as a film critic, Platinum Dunes and Paramount won't ever let me see it. To be fair, Paramount is without question the best of the major studios at screening bad movies for the press, because they've had a ton over the last five years, and I think I've seen them all except Aeon Flux.

MTV recently visited the set of the new Friday the 13th, which we also can't call a sequel because Jason's back at Camp Crystal Lake and apparently, this is the first time he's going on a killing spree. So, like Jesus, we're skipping Jason's childhood.

We get a glimpse at the cast, a nice-looking assortment of young actors including Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti, with Derek Mears from The Hills Have Eyes 2 wearing the iconic hockey mask.

My favorite part of this video is the great care taken to make sure Jason's dirtied, bloodied, beaten up mask looks just right whenever it makes an appearance.

We'll avoid all the questions about why this movie is necessary. I do think the original is so poorly made that if this were an actual remake, it might not be a bad idea. Now I'm convinced that they're only doing it because they looked at a 2009 calendar and saw that the second Friday in February is Friday the 13th.
