Box Office - Audiences 'Get Smart' on Friday

It will be interesting to see what Get Smart does over the rest of the weekend, because I'm not entirely certain what Friday's numbers indicate. Box Office Mojo reports $13.5 million on opening day for Get Smart, so you could take the easy approach and shoot a $40 million estimate at it. Or you could take the approach that it will follow the course taken by two of the three previous number ones, namely, that Friday was the big day.

Both The Incredible Hulk and Sex and the City had weaker Saturdays, where traditionally, you'll find a slight increase on Saturday, tapering off again on Sunday. I'm of the opinion that Get Smart did most of its damage yesterday, and based on the percentages the other two film worked in their debuts, I'll say the Steve Carell comedy will take in about $35 million over the course of this weekend.

That's a fairly good number, especially when you take into account that Get Smart is only an $80 million film. Getting it nearly halfway there in three days should mean a healthy profit margin.

You have to look down the list a few spots to find the week's other debut, the wretched Love Guru with Mike Myers. Collecting under $6 million on Friday, Guru is on pace to open below $20 million, and depending on how word of mouth influences anyone interested in seeing it, we may be looking at $15 million. It'll probably be right in the middle somewhere.

It does not look like it will exceed its $62 million budget on American box office alone. It'll definitely need help to get there.

And as we predicted on Thursday, there's quite a battle for second place between The Incredible Hulk and Kung Fu Panda; Hulk took Friday by just under $100,000.
