Trailer - 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor'
Friday, June 20, 2008 at 10:19PM
To me, the Mummy franchise is a classic example of
what's wrong with Hollywood. The first movie was a nice surprise, and it had
laughs and action and all the rest. The sequel was just that: A sequel.
Actually, it was a pretty bad one (remember that Scorpion King effect?).
So to assume for a moment that, seven years later, we're
just dying for
part three is a bold move indeed.
Of course, the assumption that our feelings were taken into
account is a rather bold move, too. No, this is a simple economics exercise:
Both Mummy movies doubled their budgets at home, so why not make a third?
It's not compelling evidence, I grant you, but it's really
all they've got.
Brendan Fraser's back but Rachel Weisz exits
(good girl). In her place is
Maria Bello, and now...the roguish adventurer
and his hot British wife (or at least British-sounding in this case) have a son.
Once again, I invoke the Scrappy Doo Rule of adding characters late in the
series because the filmmakers have run out of story for its original heroes.
And
Jet Li's in this as The Dragon King, so you
know, we should at least have moves that rival the rather lifeless Forbidden
Kingdom earlier this year.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which is at least a better name than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull...but not by much, opens August 1st.

Er, didn't their son appear in the second Mummy film? (He's just older in this one...)
Did he? You might be right; that movie's a bit of a blur to me.
Yeah, the son was in the second movie. Is anyone actually required to know something about the topics they write on. Thank God for the internet. Any Sloppy Joe can log on and pretend to be anything they want, in this case, an informed movie watcher. These aren't the best movies ever made but I would dare to say the 3 minutes it took me to read this review was a much bigger waste of my life than the 2 hours it took to watch each of these movies.
Wow, the punishment you take these days for not remembering an unnecessary character in a forgettable sequel that's over five years old. You see 200 something movies a year and they kind of bleed together after a while.
Could be worse, though: I could've defended the sequel to The Mummy...
If you are a true beleiver in the Mummy, you wouldnt have anything to say. If you liked the movies you would defend them whether the actress, or actor decided she/he didnt want to be part of it. I personaly love The Mummy, i own, The Mummy, Mummy Returns, and Scorpian King. I haven't seen Tomb of the Dragon Emporer, but look forward to it. I also love Jet Li hes an awesome actor, and the fact that he particaipated makes it twice as good. An i have heard very good things about Forbidden Kingdom, I think they will all come out well put together. (yes, the son was in the second movie just younger, he played a major role, he was kidnapped which lead to the whole shaboggle.)
Why aren't you on the third one?? when my dad told me i was like what!!! cuzz you were the best actorin there i could possible like and know i am sad cuzz you are not in the movie so i may not watch it cuzz you are not in there
it sucks that Rachel Weisz isn't in the next one. I hate when they switch out major characters in movie chains.
why isnt Racheal weisz in this mummy movie
When I saw that Rachel Weisz wasn't going to be in this movie, I was bummed. I love the interaction between the characters. If they were going to bring in a new love interest for Brandon's attentions...at least CHANGE the name of the character!
Director Rob Cohen has criticised British actress Rachel Weisz for refusing to return for the third installment of The Mummy trilogy.
The 37-year-old shot to international stardom after appearing in 1999's original movie The Mummy.
And, despite appearing in 2001 follow-up The Mummy Returns, she turned down a role in the forthcoming sequel The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - blaming the location for her decision. Her representative insisted the actress didn't feel comfortable spending five months shooting in China as her son Henry is not yet two years old.
But the film's director Cohen claims she actually turned down the part because movie bosses had made her character too old.
He tells Britain's Heat magazine, "I got a very angry phone from her agent, saying she'll never play the mother of a 21-year-old. I said, 'Ok, good, fine, bye.'"
Weisz has been replaced by Maria Bello in The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, which is due for release later this year.

in this sequel, Luke Ford plays as their son.. replacing Freddie Boath who is 10 years younger..
The son is a pretty big character in "The Mummy Returns", not just a forgettable extra. It's okay to forget those kinds of details... but as a reviewer myself (books, not movies), I'd have to say it's not okay to write a review without spending five minutes brushing up on the background info first. Certainly if I'm going to snark about it. :)
I haven't seen this movie yet obviously, and it may turn out to be awful, who knows. I'm not all that concerned about Rachel Weisz leaving. They had to twist her arm to get her to do Mummy 2 and she's obviously too cool for school for this one, so. John Hannah and Brendan Fraser made the first two movies for me... though I wish they'd hung onto Kevin O'Connor from the original, as well.
If anything, Weisz is the only one displaying common sense. What's next, The Mummy: Second Rise of Capone?

Hoi! I saw it (Mummy 3-Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) in London this week. It restored my faith in Fraser as an actor who is a good example for kids. But I do agree that he should try another kind of super-hero movie. Or someone else should be contracted to write a more substantial and realistic movie to relate to in these modern times whilst still staying within the realms of fantasy. Where do you get all those beautiful co-stars? Does it not make your wife jealous? You are just too good-looking and sexy for your own good! Take care Brendan!
