Jason Bourne 4 What? 4 Profit
Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 2:27AM
I have grave misgivings about a fourth Jason Bourne movie
for a lot of reasons. Primarily, I have an issue with tinkering with the legacy
of a near-perfect trilogy. You couldn't end it any better than
Bourne Ultimatum, and the series definitely got
better as it went on. Can't say that about, well, anything else. The second
movie trumped the first and the third movie was the best of the bunch, and in
fact, it's the best action movie pound-for-pound since Raiders of the Lost
Ark.
So that's the main reason. I also don't know what you do
for an encore. Where does the character go from here? Organically, I don't think
there's much else for him to do, so that poses a problem, as it did for
Indiana Jones.
Another reason: Film goes better in threes. Fours are
troublesome. They're not natural, like Joan Rivers or left-handed people.
There's no place in society for them.

However, none of those salient points seem to be stopping
Team Bourne from pursuing a lot of money. Producers
Frank Marshall and
Patrick Crowley spoke to
IESB at the Saturn Awards about the franchise.
The question was posed, "Will we see another one?"
"Oh, absolutely," said Marshall, ruining everything. "Bourne
4...Hopefully we'll be shooting next summer for release in 2010."
It was not addressed whether
Matt Damon and/or
Paul Greengrass would return, although it's
borderline impossible to see this situation working without Damon, and there
aren't a bunch of Paul Greengrasses out there. Marshall did say the story will
probably not follow the fourth Jason Bourne novel, which was not written by
Robert Ludlum. Look for him to pop up in South America this time around, and
hopefully for him, he'll get there just in time for Carnivale. That guy needs
some R & R.
I can't say news of a fourth Bourne movie is
terribly surprising, but it just doesn't feel right to me. His journey's over,
they pulled out all the great tricks in the third film, and it couldn't have
wrapped up any more cleanly. Why create a mess now?

30 years from now, the fourth actor to play Jason Bourne will be leaked to the press spawning epic hype and promises of a rejuvenated series. Later, in line at the theater, family in tow on a long Thanksgiving weekend, we will all tell our grandchildren how Matt Damon was always the best Bourne, promising to rent the classics on demand (or perhaps dust off our old-man smelling DVD collection). And I suspect that even then, on that far off future day, Julia Styles will still be hot.
Lefties rule
go fuck yourself. lefties are natural, dickhead
"Will"'s comment makes me sad, because it's so very true... I can't believe the greed of Hollywood -- go fuck up some other film idea that probably already sucks; don't mess with one of the best trilogies ever.
No, he's right. Left-handed people are unnatural abominations, and are all secret agents of the devil.
And Julia Styles has never been hot.
