Friday, June 27, 2008 at 11:47AM Trailer for 'Repo! The Genetic Opera' Hits the High Notes
Certainly an acquired taste, I would think,
Repo! The
Genetic Opera is nonetheless worth our attention for several reasons. First,
there aren't too many operas or musicals in general about organ financing and
repossession. This is probably the only one, although I'd have to check to be
sure.
In truth, it's the second one; Repo! was made as a short film in 2006, also directed by Saw's Darren Lynn Bousman, but prior to that, I can't think of any close to this storyline. How does this all work, you ask? That's another reason this one's of interest to us. In the future there's a pandemic of organ failures. To get a healthy organ, people finance them through GeneCo, but if they fall behind on their payments, the company sends trained assassins out to reclaim their product. Eww. Now imagine all that set to music if you can.
A third reason you might want to be aware of Repo! is the cast, which includes trained operatic voices Paul Sorvino and Sarah Brightman (the original Christine from Phantom of the Opera) alongside Alexa Vega from Spy Kids and Paris Hilton. Seriously? Seriously. That's actually her in the poster. Take a look at the trailer for yourself if you don't believe me.

You left out "Anthony Head" probably better known as Giles from the Buffy Universe. That alone is reason enough to see this, just not before bed, oh no, one will need hours before going to sleep to watch this level of unique madness.
I keep telling my brother the stockbroker to recommend Lion's Gate to his clients. They seem to be stealing the mantle that Miramax used to own. I'm glad to see they are putting the Saw cash to good use! (Ya hear me New Line?)
