Movie Trailer - The Hairless Comedy 'Harold'

Long before his sister Abigail was nominated for an Oscar, I was on record as saying Spencer Breslin was the worst child actor I'd ever seen. Just watch Disney's The Kid (if you dare) or The Cat in the Hat (if you're a moron) and you'll see what I'm talking about. Here's how bad he has been: In The Happening, when something dastardly befalls his character, the critics in attendance applauded. Yikes.

I must say, though, that he appears to have settled into it in the trailer for his new film, a bizarre little comedy called Harold. Breslin plays a 14-year-old with male pattern baldness. Naturally, he gets picked on pretty regularly in school. But Harold tries to use his curious distinction to his advantage. I totally get what this kid's going through; when I was in sixth grade, there was a kid in my class named Eric Dyer who had a bald spot. Has to be pretty tough.

So maybe Breslin's acting works the way Orson Welles' did. Orson always liked being under pounds of prosthetics and makeup (he was by no means that corpulent in Touch of Evil; they added close to 60 pounds of padding and a giant fake nose), because it allowed him to disappear more into the character. If that's true, I suspect that's where the comparisons between Spencer Breslin and Orson Welles come to an abrupt halt.

Harold hits theaters in select cities on July 11th.
