Keira Knightley to Portray Eliza Doolitle in 'My Fair Lady' Remake?

Since the film and musical themselves are actually remakes, I guess there's no harm remaking My Fair Lady. Here's the odd part, however: Variety indicates that the "update" will keep the score and early 20th Century setting. There is one severe upgrade over the 1960's Oscar winner, and that's the locations. Producers Duncan Kenworthy and Cameron Mackintosh - who reached a deal to remake the musical with CBS Films - will shoot in London as opposed to Hollywood soundstages. So when it's Drury Lane, it'll actually be Drury Lane, and when it's Covent Garden, it'll actually be Covent Garden. At least that's the plan. That plan also has a bit of casting news: The incredibly busy Keira Knightley is said to be in the running to play that famously prettied-up plain Jane, Eliza Doolittle. In my opinion, Knightley is probably working a bit too much, especially on these period pieces. But when her most recent contemporary attempts are The Jacket and Domino, maybe she feels more at home in some other time. Nothing against Keira, who hasn't taken an easy role since Pirates and she certainly could have, but I think I'd just like to see someone else in this part. I even think Knightley might be good as Eliza, though I'm not sold on it and frankly...enough is enough. Share the wealth. According to the report, the producers intend to roll more of the source material - George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion - into the musical and trim some of the fat that accompanies a lot of Lerner and Loewe musicals, just to give the new version more oomph.

I can't say for certain who will play Henry Higgins, but I'd push for Pierce Brosnan, who will venture into the world of musicals this summer as part of the ensemble for Mamma Mia! Curiously, Brosnan would be the same age as Rex Harrison was when he made the film back in 1963, since Brosnan is now an astonishing 55 years old.
