Prepare Yourself for 30 More 'Days of Night'

It may have appeared that it kind of underperformed expectations (not entirely true), but regardless, the book has not been closed on 30 Days of Night. Last fall's creepy vampire flick starring Josh Hartnett - based on the graphic novel - is scheduled to give birth to a bouncing baby direct-to-DVD sequel.

Bloody Disgusting has learned and confirmed that Ghost House Pictures is keen on revisiting the story of a horde of vampires that feast on an Alaskan village because they have 30 days of unending darkness.

The question in my mind is what's the sequel? Does it follow stragglers from that group of vampires to another town? Or is it about Barrow, Alaska and their efforts to rebuild their community after the attack...and possibly before the next one? There is a new graphic novel called 30 Days of Night: Beyond Barrow that might serve as the source for the movie. It would certainly make plenty of sense.

It's so early in the proceedings that there's no script yet and no director attached, but if you can make a low budget sequel, I say go for it. The first one cost in the $30 - $35 million range and made roughly $40 million in the United States. I suspect one good financial reason for the sequel is that the original made nearly another $40 million in foreign markets, proving vampire movies will sell anywhere.

And even though direct-to-DVD used to exclusively have a bad reputation, that has changed over the last couple of years, as studios recognize a much larger and more lucrative market in home video that they'll continue to exploit for years to come. And this could be a great way to exploit it.
