Paramount Unloads 'Heavy Metal'
Friday, July 11, 2008 at 12:38AM
It wasn't that long ago that we told you about
David Fincher producing a film version of the
comic
The Goon. That news came on the heels of
reports that Fincher would also steer a new version of
Heavy Metal to the big screen. And that news,
now, has sadly turned on its heels.
Entertainment Weekly says Paramount, with whom
Fincher has a great relationship, has decided not to be involved with the
project because it's "too risqué." That's a decision made by weasels. Why on
Earth would you greenlight a project that has been adult-themed for over 30
years and then months later do the research to find out what you just signed up for? That's a
real bonehead move by Paramount, a studio that had put together a string of
impressive hits and quality films over the past couple of years.
Of course Heavy Metal would be risque, but it
would also be ambitious. The idea is to have different directors create chapters
in the animated anthology, and there would be ten stories in all.The original
Heavy Metal was way ahead of its time (and risqué), although that didn't bother
Columbia...27 years ago.
So now, the project is being shopped around, according
to Blur Studios head Tim Miller. "David really believes in the project. It's
just a matter of time."
Let's hope so.

What? Did Disney buy Paramount or something? Is Michael Eisner the new studio cheif? This is something the Weinstein's would do back in the days when Miramax was adventurous. Of course the really controversial films could always be released under the Dimension label or distributed by Lion's Gate...
Makes me wonder what these guys were pitching. I'd like to find THOSE storyboards on e-bay!
