Jim Caviezel Drives an 'Outlander'

Jesus has returned.

Jim Caviezel, who was sensational as Christ in Mel Gibson's bloody Bible story, has a new sci-fi flick called Outlander, which, surprisingly enough, is not in any way based on a sport utility vehicle.

Instead, Outlander is about an alien battle on Earth during the reign of the Vikings, although the movie puts it at 709 AD, about a hundred years before the first Norse Viking raids. Why not just move it up and be a teensy bit more accurate, he asks before remembering this is about an alien war in Norway.

In a way, I dig the concept, much as I admired the basic outline of The 13th Warrior, which, as it happens, isn't much of a movie. The stranger in a strange land premise has served many a movie quite well over the years, and Caviezel's a good enough actor to make it work. He's playing the alien Kainan (there is an alien monster as well, named Moorwen) and together with a band of Vikings and their less-than-space-age technologies, he prepares for battle against his foe.

Hellboy's Ron Perlman and John Hurt co-star, as does Amy Kerr. I have no idea who she is, but her character's name is Bored Kitchen Wench, so that's something to watch out for, I'm sure.

I haven't found a U.S. release date for Outlander yet, although I'd guess early fall of this year based on the international release dates.
