We checked our handy e-mail inbox today to find a note
from The Weinstein Company that trumpets the addition of
Kate Hudson to the cast of the musical
Nine, which will be released next year. To get
the full story of Nine you have to go back over 25 years to when the play
debuted on Broadway. That musical won the Tony, and the 2003 revival did, too,
although to John Q. Public, his wife, and 1.2 children, Nine is not
Cats or Phantom of the Opera.
I don't believe you could find anyone more suited to move this play to the screen than Rob Marshall, who directed Chicago, which is unfairly criticized as being an awful movie, or at least, a bad Oscar winner. It's quite difficult to make musical theatre into musical film, especially in a more cynical contemporary film market. The same people who say they hate musicals these days roll their eyes when somebody tells them they hate science fiction or horror movies. There are no winners in that argument; they're both wrong.
Having said that, how many great musicals have there been lately? Maybe the better question is how many bad ones are there, stories that just lay there on screen while you watched a warmed-over filmed production of the stage play? Marshall brought a cinematic element to Chicago that wasn't there in Rent or Phantom of the Opera, for example.
So I like Rob Marshall for this project, and I love the cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, and now Kate Hudson. Oh sure, it trails off a bit at the end there, but look at the first four names in particular and tell me that doesn't work for you on some level.
The movie/play is inspired by the classic Fellini film 8 1/2, about a director's personal struggles with the women in his life projecting themselves onto his professional life, and the film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 11, 2009.

So, I guess either Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn or Kurt Russell bent over for Rob Marshall
Nicole Kidman AND Kate Hudson together? Count me NOT in!
Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz in the same movie, this I have to see!! wonder if they have any scenes together?
If I recall Penelope Cruz hooked up with Tom Cruise fresh from his breakup with his then wife Nicole Kidman and now they will star in the same movie together, very interesting.
