Trailer - Even With Eva, 'Live!' Has No Pulse
Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 2:19AM
I was e-mailed a link to this trailer
after we talked
about
Eva Mendes' post-rehab interview with
Interview. I'm still not sure why she was in rehab, not that it's any our my
business. I've heard she was researching a role, and since I'd never seen
evidence of her boozing too much, I can only assume that's true, she was just
exhausted from a hectic schedule, or she decided she was heading down a
dangerous path and wanted to stop it before she went over the edge. Good for
her, and hopefully it's all roses and sunshine for her now.
Anyway...this trailer. It's for a movie called
Live! and it looks completely gawdawful. You
know how those porn movies from the early 90s tried to step up their production
values even though they were still shooting on the same video cameras the local
news would use, and you know how those porn movies from the early 90s were still
concerned with plots so there was always way too much (bad) acting? Take away
the sex, and you've got the technical and dramatic equivalent of those cheap
Caballero videos here in Live!
Seriously, it's a concept that's been done before,
nobody in the new movie looks the least bit interested, and worst of all, they
couldn't even make the trailer look good. In the film, Mendes plays a ruthless
TV executive who launches a new show where the contestants play Russian Roulette
on TV for a possible $5 million awaiting the "winner." The consolation prize,
however, is a bitch.
Watch the trailer. You'll be amazed that it was produced
in this century.
As for Live!, I don't think it's headed to theaters,
either, so it's almost a complete copycat. The movie has already had its DVD
release in a couple of European countries, so I'm sure that's what awaits it
here, as well.
I mentioned that this concept has been done before: The Running Man and The Condemned both use it, and back in 2001, there was a movie called Series 7: The Contenders, which is made like it's the actual reality show being portrayed. Basically, that show/film had the win or die premise, too, and while I thought it was an effective satire...the movie never played in more than 11 theaters.
Quite a shame, really. I don't think this is an official trailer, but it's still better than the one Live! puts out there.
