'Sukiyaki Western Django' Poster Heavy on the Western

You can take one look at this poster and incorrectly identify the setting of Sukiyaki Western Django. You'd think, judging by the appearance of the characters that this is either an punched up Old West story or that it takes place in the here and now. Well, I don't know when the Old West would have been in Japan, but you wouldn't ever say to yourself, "Oh cool, a story about The Genpei Wars of the 1100s!"

There are a couple reasons for that:

1) Just look at the characters

2) You've never heard of the Genpei Wars

But the battle for land control by rival gangs is more or less the same concept we would use in some American Westerns, so this detail works just fine for me. And yes, Quentin Tarantino does play a character named Ringo, which adds to the whole anachronistic environment.

Because of the concept, I'm a little surprised that we don't get more out of the poster. I like it, but there's no real dazzle to it.

Sukiyaki Western Django came out in Japan last year, and it will make its American theatrical debut at the end of August. Thanks to IMP Awards for debuting the poster.
