Five New Clips from 'Mummy' Threequel
Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 12:22PM
Several years ago, I made a whimsical prediction that
soon enough, there would be the "summer movie season" and the "Oscar season" and
almost every movie would have to fall into one of those two categories. There are a
couple of weeks on either side where absolute rubbish is released, movies like
Code Name: The Cleaner and Wicker Man, which are so awful you can't fit them
into one of the major categories. It's looking
more and more likely that we're headed that direction. Look at the big
expectations this August, with
The Mummy, Pineapple Express, Tropic
Thunder, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Death Race all hitting
theaters within four weeks. Rewind the tape back to 2004 and you'll see that
August was filled with Collateral and Alien vs. Predator are the
only major releases that are even remotely interesting. And I'm giving AvP
a lot of slack in that regard. In 2010, Iron
Man will kick off the summer movie season in April, and Toy Story 3D
is scheduled for a February release. Next year, Dragonball, Watchmen, The
Lovely Bones, and Race to Witch Mountain, all of which should draw
significant crowds, will open before May.Think of
it like a global warming concept of movie marketing: Summer will now start in
early March, a couple weeks after the Oscars, and will run until Labor Day. Then
after a couple of weeks of garbage, awards season will start around October 1st
and runs through late February. It's happening. Oh, it's happening.
So this year, we have to prepare for multiple potential
blockbusters in August, which doesn't happen all the time. The first movie
trying to climb that mountain is The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Just to be snide, I'm going to call this movie The Mummy: Kingdom of the
Crystal Skull, because for movies with budgets this big, they sure didn't
spend much coming up with good titles. The film stars
Brendan Fraser and
Maria Bello (replacing Rachel Weisz), and while
I certainly don't love
Rob Cohen as a director, he does have
Jet Li and
Michelle Yeoh for the threequel, and given the
subject matter, that's not a bad move. We found a handful fresh clips from the
new Mummy featuring both of them, so take a look. You'll notice there's
not a lot of dialogue in these scenes...
