New 'Transformers' Logo Doesn't Tell Us Much
Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 1:53PM
You know you're a big deal when your new logo is kind of
newsworthy.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has
launched its new, rather sparse logo, at
its official site.
JoBlo hipped us to it, so thanks to them, and
right now, the logo is the only thing to report. There's some text at the bottom
of the page, "Protect" and "Destroy," and if you click on Destroy you can go buy
merchandise. Other than that, we just have a logo.
I would imagine, though, that this is definitely one of the
2009 movies to keep an eye on for some inspired marketing. Surely, everyone
involved is smart enough to realize that just mimicking what The Dark Knight
did this year won't work for every other movie, and that throwing money at
marketing just to throw money at it doesn't mean it'll be successful. The first
movie was handled very well in this regard, and it would be a real shame if
Michael Bay looked at the box office numbers
flooding in over the weekend and said, "We can do better!"
But I do think there's plenty of ways to promote a
Transformers sequel, and the presence of
just a logo may be a good beginning. We know there will be more robots this time
around, and we've already seen some location shots from the film and it
definitely looks bigger than the first. But can there be too much
Transformers? If you saw the IMAX version, that answer is yes. The final
battle is too overwhelming. I go back to the marketing theory: Just because you
have the money to throw at it doesn't mean that's the best solution. I get more
robots - hell, it's a Michael Bay sequel - but bigger doesn't always mean
better, particularly with blockbusters. They tend to get sillier the higher
their budgets climb.
So while this logo is very understated, just keep in mind
that and
Shia LaBeouf's performance might be the only
things about the Transformers sequel that will be.

It would be nice if they give the robots more of a dynamic personality, maybe some inner conflict to overcome. In the first, they seemed too one dimensional character-wise.
