Beckinsale's 'Whiteout' Put on Ice Until 2009

whiteoutposter2.jpgThis is one of two things: A damn shame, or some kind of tax writeoff.

The already delayed graphic novel adaptation, Whiteout, has been pushed back again, by over six months, and will now show up in theaters on April 24, 2009. ShockTillYouDrop confirmed the news with Warner Bros. earlier this week.

The film stars Kate Beckinsale as a U.S. Marshal investigating a murder in Antarctica. Not surprisingly, it's Antarctica's first murder - so there's something for the record books, right, kids? - but she's up against the clock because the long, dark winter is about to set in. That's opposed to all those sunny, balmy Antarctic summers. I will say that since one of her fears is being trapped in the dark with the killer, and since Antarctica has the population of a suburban coffee house on a Tuesday night, it shouldn't take long to find the killer. I mean, wouldn't you think that'd be easier than solving the same crime in New York?

Whiteout was originally supposed to be released in late September, and I thought that was a good time for it. Snowbound movies in late April aren't a very good fit, but since I have a feeling this one's going to take the ol' studio dive anyway, it may not even get a chance to prove itself.

The real pity is, of course, that it's another Kate Beckinsale movie that just won't find a big audience. Everybody thinks she's hot (because, empirically, she is), but they sure don't show up on opening weekend very often. Incidentally, I prefer her for Barbarella - which won't happen - and when the subject of Batman villains came up here this week, someone threw her name out for Catwoman. That's a pretty good suggestion. Wonder Woman, too, because Kate is much taller than you'd think, and she's tailor made to be a Bond girl.

Damn...she should just fire her agent today. Now I'm getting slightly depressed for her career.
