Sam Raimi Announces 'Evil Dead 4'

Don't get too excited about this project, because even when it happens - if that when doesn't become an "if" again - we'll all be five years older. Still, it's sure to get your attention: Sam Raimi is working on Evil Dead 4.

And according to Cinema Blend, when Raimi says he's working on it, he means this weekend.

At Comic Con, Raimi said that part four of one of the great franchises ever, horror or not, is "in the wheelhouse," adding that he and his brother Ivan are in the process of writing the screenplay. This is, of course, terrific news, because Evil Dead has become an even bigger classic in the eyes of moviegoers since Army of Darkness was released 15 years ago.

It's hard not to think that some of this is nostalgia created by Raimi's current horror movie crush (he's directing the low-budget Drag Me to Hell), but enough time has passed since we visited Ash (Bruce Campbell), and an even more fitting end to Army of Darkness is due. Or is this a new beginning? Hmmm....

The reason I don't want you to get too excited is that Raimi has plenty of other projects "in the wheelhouse," too. There's Drag Me to Hell, there's a Dennis Lehane adaptation, there's the curious marriage of Raimi and Jack Ryan, and there could always be Spider-Man 4, so if you do the math, that ties him up as a director until at least 2011, 2010 if he puts as little effort into a fourth Spidey as he did the third.

Ah, screw it - Get excited. This is pretty righteous.

You have to remember though, Evil Dead 4 has been in talks for years now. I remembering hearing about it back in 2004 (I guess that's why you threw that "if" in there). Also, have you heard about that Evil Dead remake that will feature neither Bruce Campbell or Sam Raimi? Sounds like a brilliant idea to me...oh, wait, no it doesn't. Raimi and Campbell (ah, hell, and Rob Tapert, Ted Raimi, and the Three Stooges for good measure) are what made the original series so great. It it weren't for that group of people, it would have just been a campy horror flick that would have looked like it was taking itself seriously. You should read Camp bell's book "Confessions of a B-Movie Actor." One of the best books I have ever had the chance to read.
