Surprisingly, New TV Spots for 'Death Race' Are Loud and Fast

Maybe I'm overthinking Death Race. My natural reaction, of course, it to ask myself how I couldn't overthink Death Race. And yet, I'm still troubled. For example: What the hell is Joan Allen doing in this movie? Doesn't an actress of her merits give off a different vibe? I mean, the payday can't be that good, right? So maybe the script's really top quality.

Well, hold on, it's a movie in which Jason Statham plays a guy on the wrong side of the law and his only way out is to drive really fast. That formula hasn't been held up by great screenplays before. And Joan Allen is essentially playing The Evil Warden Who Gets His (Her) Comeuppance. So I'm still confused.

Plus, I'd love to see Paul W.S. Anderson take a campy approach to this remake of Roger Corman's original, I really would, but it's all serious and gloomy. So that doesn't clear it up for me, either.

Still, it looks tremendously intense, I'll say that much for Death Race. And maybe that's all I should be expecting. This is one of those movies where I wish I knew less about it going in.

Anyway, the trailer's full of action and when I stumbled onto these new TV spots, I couldn't wait to watch them, because I really had no idea what to make of this one before now. And I still don't.

Damn you, Joan Allen.

I think those are some pretty good ads for a no-nonsense adrenaline geekgasm. So those are my new expectations for Death Race. I'll find out soon enough, I guess; the movie openson August 22nd.
