Tim Burton Casting an Unknown for 'Alice in Wonderland'?
Saturday, July 5, 2008 at 6:19PM
How long have we waited for an Alice in Wonderland
movie? Well, not counting TV adaptations, the last film to go down the rabbit
hole was
Disney's cartoon back in 1951. I think we're
due.

Tim Burton has been linked to the project
off-and-on for years, for reasons that make perfect sense. He's the best gothic
director making mainstream films and the story is a lot more bizarre than Disney
made it out to be. Recently, a film version of the trippy EA game American
McGee's Alice was sent in turnaround over at Universal, meaning it has more
or less fizzled.
And Burton has been crawling toward this story even
after his intentions to make it became known. With the director in place,
though, the next place to look is casting Alice. With apologies to Johnny Depp,
perhaps Burton could use a different flavor for this role.
Rumors had been swirling for years about possible or
probably Alices, from Dakota Fanning to Evan Rachel Wood, but
Cinematical found
an
Alice in Wonderland forum that says Broadway actress and one-time American
Idol hopeful
Ryan Nikole Parker has been cast in the role.
If you had Ryan Nikole Parker in your Alice in Wonderland office pool:
Nice guess.
No offense the the girl, but nobody's really heard of
her, although multiple comments on the forum indicate that she's the pick. We'll
wait and see what tomorrow brings, I suppose. Or actually, what Wednesday brings.
According to one of the message
board comments from someone saying his brother is the music supervisor (which
seems fishy because that position probably wouldn't be filled if the project is
two or more years away), an official press release is scheduled for July 9th, which means
we won't have long to wait to find out if she is indeed the new Alice or if this
is all just speculation. We'll call it "unofficial."
Casting a 23-year-old, I think, gives Burton more
liberties that might suit his macabre leanings than if he'd gone with a
pre-teen, as Alice is in the original book. And casting an unknown makes it more
believable because if it were Lindsay Lohan - who announced her desire to play
the part a while back - then suddenly it's Lindsay in Wonderland. And she's kind
of been there for a while, anyway. In any case, if a press release should come this week, we'll let you know what it says.
