Sunday, July 6, 2008 at 10:48PM 'Watchmen' Video Journal: The Stamp of Approval
If it's the sixth of the month (and it still is where
I'm sitting), it must be time for another video journal from the set of
Watchmen.
Here's the deal on these journals: The film will come
out on March 6, 2009, and every month on the sixth, they're releasing another
journal. Kind of neat way to keep your finger on the pulse of what's sure to be
one of the most talked about movies of the year. If it's great, then adapting
one of the most ambitious and best graphic novels on the planet will have been
worth it, at long last. On the other hand, if it's not great, then all the talk will be about
how they screwed up Watchmen, and there will be hell to pay. I don't think there's a strong possibility we'll
need to break open that bank of comments, but it's too soon to tell, of course.
For the time being, all we can do is trust
Zack Snyder
to bring this story to life. I will say, though, that based on the so-so box
office of several comic book movies over the past several years and the CGI in both
Hulk films, that some of
these stories just work better in print and for that audience than they do on screen. I'm not saying
that's going to be the case here, just that there are a lot of characters and a
lot of events - not to mention a lot of explaining - that has to be crammed into
one movie. Snyder's 300, for example, has almost no story. Great to look at, but
the storytelling is pretty straightforward and simplistic. This will be a much, much harder adaptation.
But there's good news on that front in this month's
journal, courtesy of
Dave Gibbons, who was the artist for
Alan Moore's story for
the original graphic novel. So watch it, damn it.
We'll have the next Watchmen video journal for you on August 6th.
