Eva Mendes Will Neither Confirm Nor Deny...

9610_us_article_18743.jpgUnder slightly mysterious circumstances, Eva Mendes checked herself into rehab at the Cirque Lodge in Utah earlier this year. There was plenty of speculation as to why she went to rehab - her rep said "personal issues" - and when she sat down with Interview, she wasn't exactly forthcoming...thereby kind of defeating the purpose of an interview with Interview.

Of course, if I were Mendes' position and a journalist cracked a joke, I might be buttoned up on that issue, too. When the reporter joked that Alcoholics Anonymous would have to be changed to Alcoholics Unanimous because of the rampant chemical dependencies in show business, Mendes fired back, "I'm not making jokes, because people die from this stuff. So, honestly, I think it's a bit tacky that you made a joke. I've got to be honest."

It probably was tacky, but she had to know the question was coming.

"There are so many lies out there regarding my recent trip to Cirque Lodge," she says. "But I don't care what people think. I just don't care. So I will neither confirm nor deny."

Adds Mendes, "I'm proud of people who have the determination and the fearlessness to actually go and face their demons and get better."

Amen to that.

It's a busy year for Eva, with The Women opening in September and The Spirit following in December. This month, she'll be shooting Bad Lieutenant with Nic Cage in New Orleans. Then, she has a real opportunity for a break-out dramatic role in Queen of the South. Still, there is an element of Hollywood, she says, that doesn't see her as a front-runner for a lot of roles because of her Cuban heritage. "What makes it frustrating is when a director or a studio head doesn't see me for the same part that they'll see, let's say, Drew Barrymore for.

"Drew's a great friend of mine," Mendes adds. "But it's like, 'No, we want more of an American type of girl.' And it's like, American has opened up. I'm an American girl, born and raised."

The issue of Interview hits newsstands next week.
