Iron Man Just Doesn't Get 'The Dark Knight'

"'I'll burn that bridge when I come to it' is my favourite phrase I've ever coined," admitted Robert Downey Jr. recently in an interview with Moviehole.

It's hard to argue that anyone is enjoying a better year in Hollywood, both in current box office stature and when you consider the sorts of roles he's lining up for down the road. This would be that time in someone's career when they might begin to "play the game" to protect the little empire they've suddenly found waiting for them. But Downey is apparently not going to start kissing ass anytime soon, even after the tremendous success of Iron Man and his almost immediate follow-up as an Australian playing an African American 35 years in the past in the new comedy Tropic Thunder.

In an interview that covers a lot of ground, from the inspirations of his character Sgt. Osiris in Thunder to the not-too-distant Sherlock Holmes reboot with Guy Ritchie, the most interesting comments Downey makes are about another movie, one he has no part in.

"My whole thing is that I saw The Dark Knight," he begins. "I feel like I'm dumb because I feel like I don't get how many things that are so smart. It's like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I'm like, 'That's not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.'"

Gasp: Iron Man taking a swing at Batman? Just wait: It gets better.

"I loved [director Christopher Nolan's] The Prestige but didn't understand The Dark Knight. Didn't get it, still can't tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I'm like, 'I get it. This is so high brow and so f--king smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.' You know what? F-ck DC comics. That's all I have to say and that's where I'm really coming from."

Classic. Sounds like he came to that bridge just in time to set it on fire.

Hey, it's not a fun family movie. Not every comic book movie is trying to do that, and balls to Dark Knight for trying to elevate the genre to the level of a brilliant film. But maybe RDJ wants it to be Fantastic Four? Yeah, go back to making gag reels with Tony Stark's robots.

While he is having a smashing year. Robert is clearly taking a free swing for Marvel at DC's expense. Didn't like the movie? Fine. But what the hell was up with the insults? Since the bulk of the film was written by the Nolan's, Rob is indirectly taking the piss on them.

Missing the coke, Bob?

Good, Im glad someone stood up against TDK, I mean sure it was good and all that but when I walked out of the theatres I just shrugged and went home. He will probally get alot of shit for this from the pretentious dark knight fans but there is books and school for learning... I go to a comic book movie to have fun, and had plenty of it with Iron Man

I'm with you, Shamus. I did enjoy TDK, but I enjoyed Iron Man a lot more. I think I prefer Batman Begins to TDK, actually. It's not that it was bad, but there were a lot of things that just didn't feel right. It also doesn't help that I really hate that death metal-esque "threatening" voice that Bale does for Batman. I think it comes down to the fact that I went in expecting something similar to Batman: The Animated Series and I walked out having seen something akin to Heat.

Sure, we're all aware of his bias, but he's dead-on. The Dark Knight may have been a more finely crafted film, but Iron Man was way more fun and made me want to see it again right away. Can't say the same about Batman. Oh, and DC comics are hella lame!

"... there is books and school for learning..." - you may need to stay away from the comic book movies and relearn grammar, Shamus.

What kinda bullshit is Rdj pulling? Who the hell insults themselves like this? "I get it. This is so high brow and so f--king smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie." I'm sorry Mr. Downer but saying you need a college degree basically implies you have an IQ of like 80. Now I am no genius by any stretch of the imagination, but I have the processing power to understand the film. Christphor Nolan did what Jon Favreau did NOT have the balls to do, and that's to actually create something more than a summer blockbuster. I think Mr. Downer has finally shown the extent of damage to his brain cells from his past "activities". By the way Christian Bale is much better actor.

Oh and Shamus your opinion is no longer a valid one, and trust me there is such a thing as a WRONG opinion.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterHuggy

Hey Huggy, I knew there would be kids like you who think they are smarter and enlightened by watching another Batman movie that "breaks down barriers" or whatever... but honestly who are you to tell people whos opinion is valid... TDK is good, but you fanboys treat it like an adaptation of the bible

Hey JL, if your on the internet correcting someones grammar, let alone care about it when posting on a page that barely anyone will read... your a fucking loser

"Im glad someone stood up against TDK"

I won't even mention your poor writing skills (which actually does take away a lot of credibility from anything you say). I don't know what you mean by standing up to The Dark Knight. Are you serious? Is this movie some kind of bully or terrorist that's threatening us all and making our lives hell? Do we need somebody to defend us from it? What a ridiculous comment.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJeff

I see what he means Jeff, it's being alittle over hyped right now and if you deny that then your ignorant. It was good like he said but some people feel Iron Man is better. "Ridulous comment"? I think not, Shamus will get alot of negative feedback but hese just saying what Dark Knight fans dont want to hear and the truth.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | Unregistered Commenter.MikeT

I disagree. Overhyped means it doesn't live up to the hype. But it does. I think people like Shamus just have problems with movies that get hype in general, and I kind of do too. But I thought TDK lived up to it for the most part. The only thing ridiculous about his comment really was saying that someone needed to stand up to it like it's some kind of threat to society. I got a picture of Ice Cube taking down Devo in Friday.

Good to see that RDj is still going to be himself despite his new found "empire"
or he sold out so fast and was paid to bash DK. I'll believe the former.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterOrinn

TDK is wildly overrated, I'd agree w/Downey, to the extent that the script is often incomprehensible and the fight scenes a mess of shadows and noise.

However what Downey didn't acknowledge, in the quote anyway - although it's been said a million times over - is that Ledger is stunning. I mean that literally, I saw TDK at a midnight first-day showing and the crowd fell reverently silent, as in awe-struck, after Ledger scenes. I'd never expected that sort of reaction from cartoon-derived action movies, or even from high-falutin' ecktor-aht films either.

The only other guy I'd say who's in the class of the TDK-Ledger performance is Downey himself. I'm kinda surprised he didn't give cred where it's due, but if anybody's in a position to speak truth to Hollywood, it's Downey.

"or he sold out so fast and was paid to bash DK."

I doubt that. Bashing DK gives it publicity, and there's no such thing as bad publicity. I don't think Downey is accomplishing much by bashing it anyway. People who liked it will still like it. People who didn't still won't.

Personally, I don't know what he's talking about. DK isn't like Nolan's "Memento" which was hard to follow the first time I saw it. It's pretty straight forward. Of course, I have a college education, so maybe I'm too smart to understand the struggles of the common movie-goer.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I personally think "The Dark Knight" is magnificent but know many people who dislike it. However, they don't say "f**k Batman" or "what a piece of s**t that was". So Downey, in light of TDK's critical and commercial acclaim, I don't think it's very wise of you to show the world how retarded you can be.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | Unregistered Commenter666

This is all coming from a former cocaine addict. Real-reliable source, but even if you combine the gross from both of his films this year, they won't equal the amount TDK makes.

He's just bitter that Ben Stiller's nephew was right.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRob

I think it was about a week and a half ago when The Dark Knight finally made enough money for the hipsters to come out and say that it is overrated. That's usually what happens when something becomes so wildly popular, it's not cool to like it anymore. We'll see if that backlash continues into the Academy Awards.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G.

Wah Wah Wah, you guy's are a bunch of whining children. Is RDJ a good actor? Yes. Is he a good movie critic? No. So who gives a damn what his opinions are. For shame on the original article for even passing his opinion on.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCrybaby

In a year when Hollywood lost one of its biggest future cash machines, Heath Ledger, it's good to see Robert Downey getting a second lease of life.

People were so quick to flick the switch on him during his troubled years. The point is that you help your friends when they are down. But I guess there are no real friends in the entertainment business.

Anyway, Robert Downey is always entertaining to watch. And is he right about the Dark Knight? Of course he is - and the Emperor has no clothes.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterLengthy Johnson

Iron Man was fun, no doubt about it. High cinema? No, but that wasn't the point of it.

The Dark Knight wasn't just a great comic-book film, it was a great film period. Beautiful to look at (especially in full Imax definition), a pleasure to sit through, and endlessly exciting.

If RDJ doesn't like the film, fine. For taking an unnecessary swing at DC . . . wtf? Your problem is with Nolan/Goyer, dumbass. Don't suck up to Marvel too much, Iron Man is the only good superhero in the entire Marvel canon.
