Sumptuous New Posters for Baz Luhrmann's 'Australia'

I was trolling for news on a fairly uneventful Monday night when I spotted three smallish posters for Baz Luhrmann's homeland epic Australia over at First Showing. Sport that he is, Alex Billington pointed everyone who saw the posters to Movies Online, which in turn pointed the way to Reel Suave. So thanks to all of them.

I know it's a recklessly hip thing to consider The Dark Knight a front-runner for every Oscar under the sun (it probably won't be come December), but there are a few movies that are already starting to distance themselves from what looks like a fairly average awards season crop of new releases. Certainly The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has to be high on everyone's list, and I would think if it's as good as it looks you might see nominees for Best Actor, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay, among other technical awards (makeup, visual effects, and cinematography leap to mind).

Australia may not have as good a chance to score in as many major categories, but you can't watch the trailer without recognizing how beautifully the film is photographed, and knowing Luhrmann and how he slaves over every detail, you can bet the costumes and production design, as well as the score, have a very good chance of being as close to perfect as we'll see this year.

This is all just rampant speculation, of course, but that's the sense I get, for what it's worth.

These new posters illustrate my point about Luhrmann, however. Look at how immaculately tailored they are. The saturated colors, the attention to the smallest little wrinkle. The posters are kind of an artistic DNA of the director. My only wish is that we had higher quality images to examine; I'm sure they're on the way.

Australia arrives in theaters on November 14th.

I so want this movie to be great. But is it possible for Luhrman to top Moulin Rouge??? It will be difficult.

(And doesn't the marketing make it look like Pearl Harbor 2?)
