New Character Photos for 'Dragonball'

It was maybe six weeks ago that we found quotes from James Marsters about next year's long-awaited anime adaptation, Dragonball. Marsters plays Lord Piccolo in the movie and he more or less admitted that there's a bunch of stuff the movie could never get to, simply because of its time constraints.

What I found interesting about all this was not that Marsters said it or that the filmmakers have decided to cut huge chunks out of the storyline by necessity, but rather the reaction fans of the series have had to the news. Some of our readers claiming to go way back with Dragonball don't even want the movie for precisely this reason: If you can't tell the whole story, just leave it alone.

Others agree that the story has to be trimmed but feel that the filmmakers are probably cutting out the wrong things. And still others aren't as concerned about all that and just hate the cast.

I'm not alone in being a sounding board for the hate; Alex at First Showing has received his fair share, too, and wonders if anyone is looking forward to this movie. It is, in fact, First Showing that led me to these new character photos (although they really come from Hoy Cinema and Movie Soon). We have Goku, Mai, Chi-Chi and Bulma (with Goku), so take a look at 'em and let us know just how much you hate the idea of this movie now.

Or, and this would be refreshing, why Dragonball might still be pretty good.

I want to love it, I really want to. It just seems so hard to do, and the pictures while they are ok do not inspire me. Still wont be able to say either way until the first preview starts to show up. The fans will come even if they complain. Hell most the DBZ anime movies themselves are half crap and violate the time lines along with creating new moves-techniques never seen before. As long the movie looks good they will get over there fanboy angst and enjoy it for what it is. The fact will be you just cant transfer DBZ to a movie, you have to change things to be able to make it fit.

If I recall right Goku in Dragonball was about 12 years old and in the end 15 I think. This guy looks in his late 20s so wtf. Besides doesn't it look kinda odd that goku his american and the girls are asian. Jeez. At first I konda looked forward to the idea of making a dragonball movie but now I think that the movie will suck. Too bad.

Personally... I was never a fan and I feel bad for Justin Chatwin cause I think this movie is going to completely tank his career unless he starts choosing roles more wisely.

wow shoko u dont kno shit
goku was 12 in the begging but he was around 18 at the end
he trains for 3 years by himself then even longer w/kami stupid fuckin hick

who the hell cares about all those little details..this movie is not going to suck..big buget, cast who is loving their roles and so dedicated is going to make the movie all that much better, justin chatwin as goku is an awesome choice he looks a lot like a young version of goku and the rest of the cast is pretty sweet too. I mean come on putting a 12 year old kid in a dragonball movie just to please fans, that would look incredibly stupid, now that would tank. This movie is gunna be awesome!

Where's the orange jumpsuit? It looks like Joel Schumacher's directing it under an alias...

Sunday, August 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

Maybe Robert Rodriguez should direct this and call it Dragonball: Spy Kids 4 in 3-D.

Okay, here's my problem. Where the fuck does Krillin come into play?
Yeah, no Krillin, no chance in fuck am I gonna go see that shit. Besides, so far from what I've read, they don't even follow the story.
Fucking Fucktards...

Two words: Sequel.

Fuck...I think I fucked that up.

Sunday, August 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterWill

Fucking sequel? Yeah. That's two words. Now I got it.

Sunday, August 3, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterWill

Oh and if this acually gets a sequel...

Excuse me...

Gets a fucking sequel...

They'll have to call it "Spy Kids 5: Dragon Ball Edition 2 in Imax 3D"

Why is yall making this movie about when Goku is in highschool. Goku never went to highschool. I know yall going your own thing, but make more along the story lines of the cartoon. You have the right cast, but make sure these characters hit the weight room. Goku supposed to be the world's strongest not the weakest.

First off, I'm just as skeptical as the next fan about the making of this movie. But what are you gonna do. You're either going to see it or not, I know I will. And I will do my best to enjoy it. If you really enjoy something then you should want it to succeed as much as possible and try to give it a chance. If you never give it a chance then maybe you're not as into it as you try to make yourself out to be. I'm a huge fan of all things dragonball and I know most if not all the little details. You have to try to have somewhat an understanding of the movie biz and what it takes to get this stuff done. Just give it a chance guys and if you don't like it after you've seen it, then talk all the shit you want.

There's gonna be a trilogy. We will probably see Goku become stronger at the end of the first film and more in the second. Vegeta's not down for this film, and nor is Krillin, but "Weaver" is, who could be Krillin by a different name? I dunno, let's just hope they do better than Micheal Bay would...

...Bulma.. Not green haired... NOW I'm upset...

this movie looks like its gonna suck da big one. i think to make piccolo the villan out of so many other villans to choose from is rediculous. i know they will never be able to fit the whole story line in one movie so they will have to change things but tell the better parts of the story line instead of the weaker ones.

Most of you people are pretty retarded. Dragonball takes place from the time Goku is 11 until the time goku is, as one of you stated, in his 20s. The Piccolo storyline, which is the on ethat they are doing, was when he was at his oldest. Not only that, but Krillin was dead for that entire plot. Basically, you guys are feeding off of stereotypes about Dragonball instead of ACTUAL knowledge of the show. The plot seems to be set up properly, the casting is at least servicable, and the costumes look about as good as you can expect. I'm more worried about the fact that I've never seen a picture of Goku smiling.

Basically, what I'm saying i sthis. Go look at the source material for X-Men. I mean, REALLY look at it. Now, go look at the movies. WAY different, right? And yet somehow, the same, and equally awesome! My basic point is that if you stop whining and give the movie something of a chance, it might just surprise you. Is it going to be the Goku and Dragonball we all grew up with? HELL no. But you know what I do when I want the Dragonball I grew up with? I WATCH THE FLIPPIN' CARTOON. They SHOULD change things, they SHOULD adapt things, they SHOULD modernize things. All in all I say that they are handling this the best way they possibly can! The movie's going to get made whether you all whine and bitch or not, so you may as well at least TRY to enjoy it.

I'm a huge Dragon Ball fan.
I was excited to hear about the live action movie.
But when I read the synopsis, I was pissed.
Goku does NOT ever go to high school or any school, for that matter.
The whole point is he was isolated from society.
I'm still going to see it, just to see how it goes.
I'm sure fans would be much happier if he didn't go to school.
And he was 15 at the time of the Demon King Piccolo saga.
He was a small boy! There is no way an actor in his 20s can be a small 15 year old.

yeaah.. well you know
im agree with all the comments before.. cause i dont know... theyre little details that i dont like, but i think we gotta give them a chance, you're right and they just cant transfer DBZ to a movie but maybe thats why they changed the history.
and thats why they cant put the characters as in the anime, if they put bulma with blue hair, shes gonna look creepy... seriously i prefer the characters as they are already
and im gonna give a chance to the movie

Monday, August 4, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterblanca

uhh yeaah and about the ages

that doesnt matter!!!

seriously !! thats because theyre actors!

duuh in every movie theres an old actor with young characters and theyre good!

so please ...

Monday, August 4, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterblanca

i laugh at all of you that are arguing about the age thing. seriously, watch the cartoon. this is obviously after he fought in the otherworld tournament against pikkon. if you dont remember he showed up to that tournament looking like he does in DBZ and not like the kid...
