If You Don't Count Tarantino, This 'Sukiyaki Western Django' Trailer Kicks Serious Ass

djangopostersmall.jpgWhile the world anxiously awaits the 2009 arrival of Quentin Tarantino's next film as a director, the bloody World War II epic Inglorious Bastards, his most recent work in front of the camera will pop up in exactly one U.S. theater next Friday.

Sukiyaki Western Django is an anachronistic Japanese film about rival gangs in the 1100s, fighting over a town called Yuda at the end of the Genpei Wars. Directed by Takashi Miike, Django is told using Western archetypes - hats, accents, gunfights - but because Miike has already broken the clock here, there are elements that are much more contemporary than Westerns, too, like Rambo-style firearms and explosions.

But forgive me; it seems I have buried the lead: Jesus, Quentin Tarantino is a shitty actor. Just lousy. He must have taken master classes from Melanie Griffith.

Outside of that, this trailer (courtesy of IGN) really rocks. It's very impressive. One of my favorite new trailers in a while. I'm amazed that something with this kind of cinematography and production design could come in at under $4 million. If nothing else, Miike has done a great job creating a visually compelling world for his story. Dig it:

Sukiyaki Western Django will arrive on American shores on August 29th at the Angelika in New York City, and will open at the Nu Art in Los Angeles on September 12th.
