The magazine says that Perry is a potential
"next-generation" billionaire, citing his astute diversification of his products
across theatre, television, film, and home video platforms. It's easy to make
fun of the Madea movies, but they've helped Perry build an empire that is
growing by leaps and bounds every year.
Part of his business model is releasing a couple of low
risk/high reward feature films a year through Lionsgate, and slowly but surely,
his movies have expanded beyond Madea and have become more concerned with the
African-American experience in urban America. They have also begun to attract
better casts, or do you not think the combination of
Alfre Woodard and
Kathy Bates counts for much?
Perry's new film,
The Family That Preys, focuses on two families
from different worlds that are "torn apart by greed and scandal," or so says the
official synopsis. In addition to its two matriarchs, the cast includes
Taraji P. Henson, Perry himself,
Sanaa Lathan, and
Robin Givens. Wow, there's been a Robin Givens
sighting.
