Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 1:23PM Terrific Opening Credits Sequence from 'RocknRolla'
I will say this much for
Guy Ritchie's
RocknRolla: It's one of the bigger curiosities
on the early fall slate of films. If you spend much time here at all, you've
probably already learned I'm not a fanboy and I'm not an apologist. If people
make lousy movies, I'll say they're lousy. If they make a few, I start to
question their ability, regardless of how their careers may have started. Some
people will eagerly say that RocknRolla is going to be incredible
because, you know, look at
Snatch and
Lock, Stock. Well, I was in my 20s when
those movies came out. And now I'm nowhere near my 20s.
The point is, just because Guy Ritchie made two cool
gangster movies about ten years ago, that doesn't mean this will automatically
be one, as well. And if you look at the years between Snatch and
RocknRolla, Ritchie has been probably the most disappointing director in the
world, simply because his first two major releases were so good and their
follow-ups were so absolutely awful.
So maybe he can pull it all together again. But he'd
have to prove it to me first.
I do like the opening credit sequence for RocknRolla,
but that really doesn't have very much to do with the movie. The credits were
created by
Danny Yount, and
/film reminds us that Yount has made some
pretty damn terrific credits before - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Six Feet
Under, Iron Man - but he's made a few that were on some of the worst
movies of their given years, as well, like The Invasion, The Reaping,
and House of Wax.
So don't get too excited, because these are a completely
separate thing from the movie. I do dig the holy living hell out of the credits,
though, which we found at
Trailer Addict:
RocknRolla is still scheduled for a Halloween
release. We'll see if it stays there or if it jumps on the November 7th date
left abandoned by 007.

Is that "Luda" Chris Bridges I saw in the credits? Thanks for covering this flick Colin. I am probably looking forward to this flick more than I am Burn Before Reading, which is saying alot because The Big Lebowski is one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw it at Harkins Centerpoint in 1996 on a holiday from Bangor, Maine.
Do you know what else I saw at Centerpoint? Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It was way better than Snatch. So while Madge was guesting on Oprah and badmouthing John McCain, Guy Ritchie decided to go out and redeem hisself.
I was in my 20's then too. Waiting patiently or the next QT. Sure thought that Rithie was our man.
Maybe he still is?
Speaking of Luda...has he made a bad movie? Give him Crash. Fine. But I just saw Hustle and Flow for the first time the other day (after a consult meeting with Marvel re: the new "The Stand" Adaptation) and that flick is arguably better than Crash...
Makes me even more curious about Rock N Rolla!
