Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 11:40AM Better Late Than Never: Co-Star Blasts 'Basic Instinct 2' and Sharon Stone
I love it when I can go back a couple of days and
reference a story that works in more than one context. We mentioned that
director
Mathieu Kassovitz is doing everything he can to
bury his new film
Babylon A.D., claiming the studio wouldn't let
him make the movie he wanted to make and that
he's very unhappy with it. The studio's not too
pleased, either; Babylon won't screen for critics.
But I mentioned how rare it is to see that kind of
public position from an actor or director before the movie is released. Case in
point:
David Thewlis
was one of the stars of
Basic Instinct 2,
which is now more than two years old, and won a passel of Razzie awards for its
"merits," and only now are we getting quotes about how awful that movie is.
"It was a pile of shit, wasn't it," the actor asks
Contact Music rhetorically.
Compare that to what he said
back in 2006, when asked whether he would've
directed it differently, and Thewlis replied, "Well, I mean [director
Michael Caton Jones] made a very good job of
it. I think he shot London very beautifully."
But the real hook to this story isn't that Thewlis said
Basic Instinct 2 was a bad flick, but rather his take on co-star
Sharon Stone. Now, two years ago, Thewlis said,
"She was very well behaved...That’s the honest answer. I can’t speak for
everybody else, but in my own personal experience she was perfectly respectful
and polite and quite quiet actually, but she’s quite an intense girl and I’m
sure that other people can answer that better than me."
Fast forward to 2008, and Thewlis is saying, "It was
actually very pleasant for me. I didn't have much to do with Sharon Stone. And
thank God because I heard she was a fucking nightmare."
Now, granted, he didn't not say she was a terror back in
2006, but based on the same information he had then ("other people can answer
that better than me"), he's now saying she was a nightmare. That's also not much
of a revelation in and of itself. But I still prefer the Kassovitz Method:
Waiting two-and-a-half years to jump on the Basic Instinct 2 Sucks
bandwagon is not the boldest act of courage I've ever seen.
It's still amusing, however.

I would have Sharon Stone be nasty to me any day :)
Sharon Stone is one of the nicest and socially aware actors I know of. People need to get off this bandwagon and start paying attention to more importnat issues.
