'Magneto' to Film in 2009?
Sunday, August 3, 2008 at 2:22AM
No doubt about it,
David S. Goyer is a go-to guy for comic book
movies. Among his many credits are screenplays for the Blade movies, the Crow
sequel, and both Christopher Nolan Batman movies. And now Marvel has come
knocking, with Goyer slated to write the X-Men spinoff for
Magneto.
Talking to
IGN at Comic Con last week, Goyer said that he
had spoken to Fox bosses within a few weeks about when Magneto might get
underway, and Goyer wants to finish the film he's writing and directing - a
horror flick called
The Unborn - before he tackles the Eric
Lensherr/Charles Xavier origin story.

"Magneto seems to be a movie that Fox still wants to make...I'm still working on Unborn through November, so we said, 'Hey, OK, when I finish Unborn we'll talk,' and maybe we'll get that going next year."I really like the approach Marvel is using with the X-Men characters now. Actually, it's a little surprising that they're featuring two of the most visible mutants from the trilogy in the X-Men Origins series right out of the gate. With so many characters that the series couldn't spend that much time on, it would stand to reason that one of them would probably leapfrog Magneto in the sequence. Obviously, to get the ball rolling, you need to use Wolverine, and from the near-universal acclaim the Comic Con trailer has received, that's another great move by Marvel. This origin story is fascinating, as well, with two incredibly powerful friends ripped apart by their philosophies on how such power should be used. Magneto is still on Marvel's docket for 2009, but if Goyer's the writer and director of record, you have to wonder how practical any release date in '09 actually is.

I'm wanting this movie to be made like an Indie...cheap filmstock, limited special efx...all character development and story.
Can they pull it off?
Here's hoping!
(McKellan owns this character!)
Give it to Fox Searchlight...if they still exist!
