Brett Ratner Wants to Bring 'Guitar Hero' to the Big Screen

Brett Ratner gets a lot of grief and he deserves a lot. It's really not even because of his movies; his personality is the biggest problem I have with him. Anyway, in the perfect situation, I think he could be a perfectly serviceable director. I don't want him taking over a Terry Gilliam film or remaking Kurosawa, say, but you can find a good project for a guy with well-honed hack skills.

Case in point, The Rat would hypothetically love to direct a Guitar Hero movie.

Sitting down with MTV, Ratner drooled over the prospect of another video game adaptation (he's linked to God of War, which is not an ideal pairing). "I would love to do a Guitar Hero movie, if Activision would ever let me," he said. "I’m trying to convince them, but why would you have a movie screw up such a huge franchise? Not that I would make a bad movie. So that would be cool, to do a Guitar Hero movie. ”

If anyone would have the ear of Activision, it would be Ratner, who has weaved Guitar Hero into music videos for Miley Cyrus and Mariah Carey, and he also directed a pair of commercials for the game that aired during the American Idol finale this May. “I have a deal with Activision for their branding,” he explained. “For instance, naming Guitar Hero: World Tour, coming up with the new Guitar Hero game name. It’s sort of like [MTV's] Rock Band. So they said: ‘Come up with a name.’ And I did, and it became Guitar Hero: World Tour.”

The math is pretty simple, really: Pop culture phenomenon + Low expectations + Two-bit director = Coming Soon to a Theater Near You.

HOW, it's a game about pretending to play a guitar by timing colored keys on screen to your plastic guitar. It's a great game but how on earth do you even begin to make it into a movie? ....and now I am reminded of the super mario brothers movie, thats how you do it, you make garbage loosely related to your source material.
