On October 17th, the world will finally get to see what
Oliver Stone has planned for President George
W. Bush. Is his new bio-pic sympathetic to a man clearly achieving beyond his
station or is it a hatchet job, kicking Bush in the same wounds that have never
healed over the past five years or more?
I'm not confident this is an award winner - it just
doesn't have that aura - but
W. has a curiosity factor few films this fall
can match. If you believe Primary Colors is a factual look at Bill
Clinton, then this film would join that as the only bio-pics ever made about a
sitting president. There's also the question of how legitimate Stone's point of
view is, given his history with political subjects. Plus, it does have a good
cast and if
Josh Brolin is good as Dubya, we might see him
get more leading man work for a while; he certainly deserved this step up after such great performances in 2007.
We finally have our first clip from W., so we can
get a better idea of just what we might be dealing with. It shows a young Dubya
meeting Laura at a bar-b-q , and since George Bush doesn't set himself on fire,
I guess we'll put this scene in the Fair to Bush column. Then again, since he
didn't set himself on fire, maybe it's a complete fabrication.
Now I'm totally confused. Just like the leader of the
free world.
