I don't know a lot of movie critics who will go out of
their way to watch a
Saw movie. After having access to the first
two films (and I preferred
Saw II), the studio mysteriously stopped
providing access, with the most logical thinking being that the movies don't
need critics, especially after the audience knows to look for the subsequent
movies the week before Halloween every year.
I get that, but after buying the really sub-par
Saw III on video and catching an opening
day showing of the more redeemable
Saw IV, the series needs help, in my
opinion. What I like about this franchise is that it makes the rules of the game
so hard on the screenwriters. You really do have to think to put one of these
movies together, as opposed to a Friday the 13th sequel.
There are two ways
Saw V can go: Up or down. Odds are, it won't go
up. Give me a part five that's better than part one or two. The only hope I have
is that because the last movie was better than the one before it, maybe they've
found a new way to do the same old thing. If not now, then they better do it
soon; even though these movies cost next to nothing, the returns are
diminishing, meaning the audience is starting to thin and they aren't gaining
any new converts.
I like the little I've seen from Saw V, and this
new poster is no exception. Maybe there's still life (after death) for Jigsaw,
after all.

As you would expect, Saw V will be released on October 24th. The bar is at $65 million; that's what part four made and if this one fails to get near that number, it might be time to take a hiatus.

I'm calling for an international boycott of Saw movies. Not because they are too violent. Not because they are misogynist or sadistic.
Oh no.
But, America, you must stop putting money in Lion's Gate's pockets...
They can't be responsible for what they do with it.
Don't believe me? Then go see Disaster Movie this weekend.
The series had a good run nonetheless, no matter how no.5 turns out.
Star wars.
