Robert Downey Animated Flick 'Master Mind' Needs New Master Mind
Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 9:12PM
Not even a week after
Robert Downey Jr. was announced as the star of
a new DreamWorks animated flick, word comes that the movie now has to start
searching for a new director.
Moviehole is reporting this weekend that
Kyle Jefferson and
Cameron Hood were attached to direct
Master Mind for a while, but that they have not
been on board for a few months. What probably happened here was that news
never filtered out about the departure of the filmmakers and when Downey's signing was
announced - making this project front page news for a few minutes - the two directors were wrongly being attributed. I can't imagine why
else this news would break now if it did indeed happen months ago.
Master Mind sounds like an inverse Incredibles:
Downey would play an evil superhero villain who accidentally vanquishes his
heroic archenemy and realizes he has nothing left to live for.
Tina Fey is also in talks to lend her voice to
the animated flick, which
Ben Stiller will co-produce.
We don't have a feel for who might replace Jefferson and
Hood, although good directors for animated movies are probably harder to find
than good directors for live action. With the success DreamWorks has had over
the past few years, they shouldn't have any problem getting qualified
candidates, but this should still set back the project by a few months, I would
think. I don't know if Master Mind has advanced beyond the script stage,
but you'd think the animation would have to jive with the new director, whomever
that turns out to be.
Could this derail a penciled in November 5, 2010 release
date? Oh, probably.
