Remember when
Joss Whedon was going to do a Wonder Woman
movie? All the Buffy fans were adamant that
Sarah Michelle Gellar was perfect for the role
(she isn't) and then there were whispers that
Eliza Dushku might get to throw on the red,
white, and blue satin (getting warmer).
All of that talk about a Wonder Woman movie
slowly faded away. She was supposed to be in the Justice League movie,
but that film never got off the ground, either. Seriously, is it that hard to do
a Wonder Woman movie? I mean, they're making Ant-Man!
What DC Comics has done in the meantime is animated DVD,
and if you've checked out
Batman: Gotham Knight yet, you've seen a little
preview of the
Wonder Woman cartoon. Weird that the principals
from Waitress,
Keri Russell and
Nathan Fillion, supply the voices for Wonder
Woman and Steve Trevor. Even weirder is that the actress I've pushed since day
one to play Wonder Woman in a live action movie provides the voice for Artemis
in the new DVD.
Rosario Dawson, in my opinion, would be
perfect. She's tall, athletic, some would even say Amazonian, and she has a bond
with comic books already from her own independent publishing company and her
role in Sin City. Just a little lobbying there. I doubt a major studio
would ever strongly consider her for the role.
The cast is rounded out by
Alfred Molina and
Virginia Madsen, so yes, this is a film that DC
and Warner Premiere would like to see do very well.
Movieweb has the brand new trailer for
Wonder Woman, and here it is.
You can pick up Wonder Woman on DVD next
February.
But since I brought up Sarah Michelle and Dushku and
Rosario Dawson, who are your choices for a live action Wonder Woman if it ever
happens? Australian model
Megan Gale was the rumored choice to play her
in the JLA movie. She definitely looks the part, but she's not really a lead
actress. Clearly, it's a perfect fit for
Jessica Alba, but with her Marvel superheroine
- a role she was a terrible choice for - I think that's out of the question. But
she's an ideal candidate.
Five or six years ago,
Jennifer Connelly would have been an absolutely
perfect choice, although I haven't seen her play much action. But she's a great
choice physically and could certainly handle the script.
A lot of people right now are in love with
Megan Fox, and I can see that, I guess. She'd
need to bulk up a bit. I saw someone suggest
Camilla Belle on a message board, probably a
carryover from 10,000 B.C., and the same goes for her. I'm a big believer
that the actress needs to be tall with a slightly muscular build or all the
other actors need to be short and puny, you know? There's a reason
Lynda Carter played the role (and it wasn't
really her acting...shhh...). Carter looks the part, and she's 5'9".
It doesn't just come down to height, of course, but
Sarah Michelle Gellar is barely five feet tall. It just wouldn't work.
Charlize Theron would be a good choice, but I
think once you get over 35, it's probably not a role for you. She's getting
close.
Summer Glau from Whedon's Firefly and
The Sarah Connor Chronicles could pull it off, and I think pretty easily,
although I'd like her to be another inch or two taller.
Though I could be missing a couple slam dunk choices, I
keep coming back to
Jessica Biel, and she's probably the way
Hollywood would want to go. She could definitely do the action, and she's got to
be hungry for a franchise opportunity. I'm not the biggest Jessica Biel fan, but
it would make a lot of sense.
So now the only question is, when the hell are they
going to make it?
Rosario would be an OUTSTANDING choice w/a competent (at least) director (in other words, NO Pitof!) at the helm, which means it'll probably Kate Hudson in a dark wig when all is said and done ;(...
Do we really need a Wonder Woman movie? Somehow it's a worse premise than Superman. Superman only gets a pass because he was created in the 1930s, when everything in entertainment was corny. Come on, only Kryptonite can stop him and every bad guy seems to be able to find it? Not buying it.
I can watch a thousand different movies to see a hot brunette in a bikini. Hell, there's a ton of free porn out there if I like. This movie shouldn't be made for that reason.
Also, as far as the animated thing goes, do we really have to have every cartoon made in this American Anime style? It killed the new Masters of the Universe series for me (besides the new design of gay porn He-Man) and it just lacks something. Anime is awful, and so is the American version. Ba humbug on the whole mess.
Incidentally, Wonder Woman was created in 1941, by which time, entertainment was clearly no longer corny.
I don't know if we need this movie or not. But if DC Comics is going to stay competitive, they can't only rely on Superman and Batman. I mean, Marvel is throwing characters from all over into movies. To me it makes sense to highlight their main point of differentiation, which really is Wonder Woman.
I personally think Rosario Dawson wouldn't be the wisest choice. You would have the hardcore fan boys up in arms that a non-white person is playing their hero. Just my opinon. I think they should totoally bring in a fresh face. Someone with the qualities of Linda Carter but someone that could also bring a new feel to Wonder Woman. I also think Joss should write it and produce it, maybe caliberate with Jerry Bruckheimer for the action. As for director I don't know. Maybe Michael Bay, but I think he would make it all about him. I really don't know. Ok I'm off my soap box.
Personally i think Missy Peregrym from 'Stick It' and 'Reaper' would be great choice. She is pretty tall at 5'7" and is very athletic and is a fresh face. Plus she is not so bad to look at either.
MANDY MOORE, MARY ELIZABETH WINSTEAD, ARIELLE KEBBEL, or JESSICA BIEL. The role is all about stature and frame. If Mandy Moore got in great shape for the part, I think she'd be good. She's the tallest of Hollywood's starlets, at 5'10".
Well let's see. The SMARTEST choice from the business side, would be Sarah Michelle Gellar. She has a HUGE fan base of course from Buffy. That would draw millions of people alone. She is good at doing super hero stuff. An amazing actress. HOTTER than any woman on the planet.
From a Fan Base for Wonder Woman, the best actress would be, Sarah Michelle Gellar. there are ways to make actors appear taller. And if alot of the movie is going to be edited with CG, it shouldn't be hard to make her seem a few inches taller.
Jessica Alba is a HORRIBLE actress and isn't even White! she's like, Mexican or whatever. Wonder Woman is white. there's no budging on that. She sucked in Fantastic 4. I wouldn't cast her in anything.
I'd prefer somebody with some mediterranean pedigree--Diana is Greek after all
My first thought was the stunning Caterina Murino who dies far too early in Casino Royale. Likely she's too dignifed to go running around in the WW outfit, but it's an idea
Have you seen American Gladiator Gina Carano?
Wonder if they can bring back Debra Winger as Wonder Girl
Rosie O'Donnell? Man I just don't see how that could ever work. Do you really think she could handle the stunts and... uhhhh, oh, did you say Rosario Dawson? Yeah, her.
I like Rosario Dawson. I don't care whether you guys "need" a Wonder Woman movie. My little girl DOES. That's the audience they should make the movie for.
Rosario is in no way Wonder Woman nor is Sarah Michelle Gellar. I would prefer they find some unknown to take on the mantle. With Wonder Woman it is as much how much she looks like Wonder Woman as it is how much she sounds and acts like her.
Would you have thought of Denzell Washington as Bruce Wayne? Or for that fact what if they had Chris O'donnel play the part of Black Lightning.
I for one, think they should bring back Lynda Carter...she still looks hot; she could play Princess/Queen Diana, bringing in the old fans, and be looking for someone to take WW into the next generation...just an idea
I like Dushku for the role... she's very, very athletic, brunette, great facial features, and a terrific actress on top of it all. As for height, her boots can have heels.... ;)
Wow, that animated Wonder Woman looks AWFUL! Nothing like Wonder Woman in Justice League. No style, no real beauty, she even sounds stupid. I think we've learned by now that the animated versions actually need to be better than live action to keep the geeks happy. What was DC thinking?! Ugh, they don't respect their audience.
1) Yes, we need a Wonder Woman movie... & have needed one for the last 10-20 years, if you follow the pattern; look at Superman and Batman. They started out as comics & radio shows, then roughly 20 years later arrived on television, then roughly 20 years later went to the big screen with feature film franchise (say that 5x fast) treatment. Ask anyone who the "Big 3" are in the DC Universe, & they'll say, "Superman... Batman... Wonder Woman". So why is it that Sup & Bats have gotten fair treatment, but WW has been ignored. She hasn't evolved within the same pattern since Lynda Carter, & it's been almost 30 years now. She is way overdue for a movie. Why DC can't see that, I don't know.
2) As far as actress choices, there are 4 criteriae that are absolutely irrefutable. First, she must be tall. If she isn't at least 5'10", forget it; CGI can only go so far & still be believable. Second, she must be Greek; anything else would infer that people are stupid & don't know the difference between a Suede, a Siamese, & a Sudanese. As such, she will have light olive skin & black hair (no wigs!). Third, she must be muscular (like Lucy Lawless/Xena), although not beefy (female wrestlers/gladiators need not apply). God knows we have seen the mistakes DC has made in casting "athletes" who can't act (eg. what's-his-face Bane, or "Ahnold" Mistah Freeeeeze, in Batman & Robin). Which leads into the most important fourth point, someone who can actually ACT. So SMG (puhleeeeez) is most definitely OUT--goodbye & good riddance to bad rubbish.
P.S. If you even have to question whether we need a Wonder Woman movie, then you are not a fan of Superheroes or comics, & forfeit the right to say anything about them. The world would be a dreary place without them, and I pity you for their absence in your life. Wonder Woman has meant so much to so many; a model of stength, courage, inspiration, & hope for those who could not relate to other characters. She reached the unreachable. She has earned her stripes (& stars), & deserves to be recognized for it.
P.P.S. I agree (in effect) with BlaqueDragon, in that it would be a great tribute to Lynda Carter if she was involved. I'm thinking she should play Queen Hippolyte. So if the DC powers that be, are reading this, the responsibility is upon them to make the right choices--the smart choices, like Marvel has--and follow through. And hopefully soon.

I vote for Lauren Graham.

Lauren Graham is smokin' hot and a safe bet for us older dudes...
But if I am a hollywood-type I gotta be thinking Megan Fox.
Um...Strictly from a business sense though...yeah.

Folks, that Wonder Woman glare that screams "you are a lesser mortal being" can only be duplicated by one woman: Adriana Lima.

I was thinkin that Anne Hathaway would be perfect.
She's 5'8".
She has the hair and figure.
She has a good record with innocent, good hearted roles.
She can handle stuntwork..
What else is there.. ?
Oh, yeah.. She's smokin hot.
Just a thought.

Tara Patrick;'nuff said!

Gina Torres was an awesome and strong soldier as Zoe in Firefly, she would be a perfect wonder woman!

Nathalie Kelley (Fast and Furious:Tokyo Drift) is a definite possibility...

why not an asian american actress like lucy lu? that's a market not well tapped and many young girls that could aspire to be wonder woman!
who should play Wonder Woman?? Hellllllllllo...Eden Riegel that's who
Eden Riegel = perfect choice for Wonder Woman
She's a great actress, really looks the part, has major charisma and even has the lasso skills already!
