'Gossip Girl' Saves the Planet

This weekend,
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2
arrives in theaters. When the first one was released in 2005, there were two
fairly famous names -
Alexis Bledel and
Amber Tamblyn. Both starred in critically acclaimed TV
shows, Gilmore Girls and Joan of Arcadia, respectively. Now the shoe is clearly
on the other foot; those shows are no longer on the air, and
America Ferrera won
an Emmy last year for
Ugly Betty and the fourth member of the sisterhood,
Blake
Lively, is the star of one of the hottest youth-oriented shows on television,
Gossip Girl.
I was looking for something - anything - relevant to
Traveling Pants 2 to write about here at The Big Picture (leading up to their
release, we always like to feature the new releases the studios let us see), and
I came across this compilation of environmentally conscious public service
announcements featuring the Gossip Girl cast. Clearly, it's an important issue
in this election year, and to be honest, even though I do a bit of green living
myself, a steady stream of reminders can't hurt.
Plus, let's look at the potential impact something like
this could have on the impressionable young minds sucked in by the show on a weekly basis. I like that these ads aren't preachy and they aren't advocating
expensive, life-altering decisions but rather simple solutions to help the
environment and to cut down on frivolous energy spending.
It was either this or Blake Lively bikini candids, and
frankly, it was a tough decision. In the end, it came back to Sisterhood 2,
because after all, that movie is openly recycling the story from the original.

And knowing is half the battle! Yo Joe!
"You see that pale, blue dot? That's us. Everything that has ever happened in all of human history, has happened on that pixel. All the triumphs and all the tragedies, all the wars all the famines, all the major advances... it's our only home. And that is what is at stake, our ability to live on planet Earth, to have a future as a civilization. I believe this is a moral issue, it is your time to seize this issue, it is our time to rise again to secure our future."
