'Mirrors' Featurette with Director Alexandre Aja

mirrorsposter3.jpgI've got a hunch that Mirrors will do pretty well this month. There seems to be a lot of positive response to the project in general - more than the negative response, anyway - and the trailers and TV ads have caught a lot of people's attention, and in a very competitive weekend, that's always a big key.

Now, let's not get carried away: It's still sitting in coach on August 15th, while Tropic Thunder and Star Wars: The Clone Wars get to enjoy nice warm towels and their own delicious menus up in first class. I hear that the flight attendants even go all the way in first class.

Lucky bastards.

Still, it's not like this movie has the budgetary concerns of Tropic Thunder, and good horror movies, as The Strangers proved, have a way of finding an audience that doesn't normally see the others, even when history points out they don't normally do bang-up business in the summer.

I think this is an important movie for director Alexandre Aja. He's shown me a good deal of inventiveness behind the camera and among the Splat Pack group of directors, I think he has the highest ceiling. If this movie's a hit, maybe he can get a terrific, original horror movie going that has a solid budget, attracts big stars, and forces the studio to market it aggressively. Or, he could go a completely different direction and do something nobody expects. If Mirrors bombs, I think those things would be harder to accomplish, but he has a real gift for telling these kinds of stories, so hopefully it comes through for him.

In case you didn't know, Mirrors is another Asian horror remake; the original is a Korean film from 2003. Kiefer Sutherland, Amy Smart, and Paula Patton head up the cast, and here's a brand new featurette from Mirrors featuring the French director. So at the very least, even if you're not looking forward to the movie, you can mock his accent and quote lines from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Mirrors hits theaters on August 15th. Kudos to Bloody Disgusting for the brand new poster and Trailer Addict for the featurette.
