George Lucas Says No Harrison Ford, No Indiana Jones

Though it's never very educational these days, it's still fun to read what George Lucas has to say from time to time. Lucas has always been an idea guy more than a detail guy. And as much as I think his career has ridden on fumes for a quarter century, there have been very, very few artists in the history of the movies with the kind of home run ideas Lucas once had.

He's still out in front of a fifth Indiana Jones movie, even though just a couple weeks ago he said he's more or less at odds with Steven Spielberg over the direction the series should take. And Lucas is even contradicting himself (or at the very least changing his mind) about where he'd like to see it go from here.

Back in May, Lucas said of the franchise, "I have an idea to make Shia the lead character next time and have Harrison come back like Sean Connery did in the last movie." Of course, a fair percentage of people already believed that was the way the series would go, with the fourth movie serving as the passing of the torch. The Beard has since reversed field, telling the Associated Press that Harrison Ford "is Indiana Jones," meaning, in essence, any step forward would be with Ford in the lead role.

"If it was [Shia's character] Mutt Williams it would be Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis or something," Lucas added.

I guess that doesn't exclude Ford from popping up at the end of Mutt's search for Elvis or D.B. Cooper or whatever it would be, but it sounds like we'll only get a fifth adventure under the name Indiana Jones if Indiana Jones is back in the fold full-time. I don't know what Ford thinks about all this, but he seemed to really enjoy talking about Kingdom of Billy Crystal's Skull in interviews this summer. And despite very average reviews, Indy is the year's second biggest movie, so from an economics standpoint, there might be justification for another round.

I know Lucas, Spielberg, and Ford could really use the money, too, so...

Lucas says he's doing research now trying to come up with "another object for him to chase," and I recommend the Fountain of Youth. It's been done before, sure, but he'll be 70, after all.

Throughout the summer, Lucas has maintained a cautious party line about a fifth movie that he echoed again this week: "The franchise really depends on me coming up with a good idea."

Would that it were 1980 again, huh? Because post-1982, Lucas has been stuck on the treadmill at a downhill angle.

I'd much rather see "The Further Adventures of Short Round" than I would "Mutt Williams meets The Mummy". There really is alot of information here though:

1. Indiana Jones dies with Harrison Ford (at least until Lucas himself dies and George's son needs cash).
2. If Shia carries the mantle, he'll do it on his own as a stand alone character with a bad, unmemorable name.
3. Even more likely, Lucas is suggesting that Shia's personal problems might mean that he just got fired from ever coming back at all.

If there is a fifth Indiana Jones movie, I think that it should be a tribute to the sci-fi careers of both standard bearers involved. And since Spielberg has always secretly wanted to get his hands on Star Wars, this might be the opportunity to have the two universes collide.

Crystal Skull sort of opened up that possibility...

Can you imagine an aging Indiana Jones staring face to face with an aging Han Solo and his greying wookiee counterpart? And then grabbing their respective whips and blasters to go fight Evil ET's riding bareback on Jaws-like great whites?

I can.

And you better believe that the rest of America will be willing to give what's left of their hard earned money to George and Stephen.

Yee haw!

Write the script, man. Save us from whatever "good" idea Lucas comes up with.

That's when the JAWS music would kick in.

First off, the series should have been left alone with "The Last Crusade". Another thing, if Lucas wanted to do a series in which Indiana passes the torch, he should have used a more older broader person like Christian Bale instead of some geek name Shia. Another thing, know one can play Indiana Jones other than Harrison Ford. If Harrison Ford never took the part then the series would not have been a successful as it was. If he makes a fifth one, then Harrison neads to have the lead and be the main hero and the title should be something like "Indiana Jones and the Search for Eden" where he looks for the Garden of Eden from the Book Genesis, or something like that. Mixing Indiana Jones with an alien wasn't a new idea. The Crystal Skull action was good until the atom bomb scene, afterwards the action got really dull. Bottom line, no one can play the Indiana Jones series better than Harrison Ford. He became the biggest reason why the series did so good. Who wants to see this soft, thin, geek (Shia LeBouf) trying to hold the mantle of Indiana Jones? Come on Lucas, think.

The search for the The Garden of Eden is not a bad idea for wrapping up Indiana Jones. It's possible to picture an aging Dr Jones sitting back against a tree by a stream and pushing his hat forward to take a nap in the Garden of Eden at the end of the film. Closure at last.

There is a lot of Old Testament spooky things to spice it up with along the way.

Good thinking, Tristan.
