Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 9:41AM Bernie Mac Passes Away at 50
Comedian and actor
Bernie Mac has died suddenly at the age of 50,
losing his weeks-long fight against pneumonia.
He passed away this morning at Northwestern Memorial
Hospital in Chicago.
Earlier this week, his publicist Danica Smith hit out at
reports claiming the comedian's heath was rapidly deteriorating, saying that
doctors reported him in stable condition on Thursday, and adding that he was
"responding well to treatment."
WENN reports that Smith also believed Mac would
be released from the hospital in a matter of weeks.
It is unclear at this time how this diagnosis reversed
itself so quickly, and reports only indicate that he died after experiencing complications
related to the pneumonia.
Bernie Mac had been a standup comedian since the age of
19, and beginning in the early 1990s, appeared in a number of films that set him
up for a breakthrough performance in
Friday (1995). He also appeared memorably in
lead and supporting roles in
Bad Santa,
Mr. 3000, and the
Ocean's 11 trilogy. His TV series,
The Bernie Mac Show, which ran for five
seasons, earned the comedian a pair of Golden Globe and Emmy nominations.
