Friday, August 8, 2008 at 10:13PM Wait...Another Hercules Movie? We're Going to Need More Loincloths
Skeptical is the best word I could use to describe my
reaction to the news that
a new Hercules movie was on the way.
Clearly a reaction to 300 - and not wanting to get lost in a resurgence that
already includes a new franchise for
Conan the Barbarian - Hercules: The Thracian
Wars will be based on a new comic books series and will be directed by
Peter Berg, who many not be the first name on
my list when I think "gladiator movie."
And if I was skeptical of that venture, imagine how I feel
about another Hercules movie, this one produced by and starring the dude
in this picture.
That's Russian bodybuilder-actor
Alexander Nevsky, who should not in any way be
confused with Russia's Grand Prince of Novgorod during the 13th Century. This
guy has entirely different aspirations and qualifications. The 6'7", 285 pound
Nevsky will "play the classic Roman hero adopted from Greek legend (where he's
called Heracles)," according to
The Hollywood Reporter.
The film will be called Hercules: The Beginning
(although if he's called Heracles in the legend and the movie is based on that,
wouldn't you think...oh, never mind). Nevsky's production company, Hollywood
Storm, will produce the film on a $12 million budget. Perhaps you've Nevsky's
other films, which include
Treasure Raiders,
Time of Change, and
Moscow Heat, plus the 2009 release
Magic Man.
No? Not ringing a bell? Well the three films that have
already been released have an IMDB rating of 10! OK, so that's their combined
rating...Oh, and look for
Billy Zane in Magic Man. That's right:
Cinema's The Phantom!
I guess, on the plus side, he looks the part. I don't know
how they're going to explain his accent, though. Maybe there's a Little Odessa
at the base of Mt. Olympus or something that we don't know about.
