'Eagle Eye' Director Spying 'Thor'

Here's a candidate out of the blue to take over Marvel's developing Thor adaptation: D.J. Caruso, director of Disturbia and the upcoming Eagle Eye. The news comes not from Marvel and not even from that most reliable source Derek Luke, but rather, the director himself.

In an interview with IESB, Caruso was asked about directing a comic book movie, and Thor is the one he chose:

"I know that they [Marvel] have a script, but there's something, there's a fear I have about Thor and depending on what Thor story you want to tell, whether you want to bring Thor into the modern world or if you want to go back to Asgard and get the history of what's happening between him and his brother and dad. That's one I've always been interested in and it also would be, it would be a monumental task so, I could definitely see myself getting myself into that."

Caruso also says he's had "some talks with Marvel," but admits he hasn't seen a screenplay. So, odds are they've had an exploratory conversation or two, but nothing more.

Thor is one tricky bastard in terms of making a film adaptation, and Caruso is right about whether or not you want to go the Asgard route. I think you'd have to have some Asgard no matter what the rest of the story looks like. But I also think visualizing Asgard and the bifrost bridge and all that could pose major problems. Also, you'd probably have to cheat a bit when it comes to Thor's physical description, since he's 6'6" and over 600 pounds. I just have my doubts about this property; they don't all make great movies.

Could Caruso make it a worthwhile project? I know he could probably make it a pretty good mainstream flick, and I guess that's ultimately what Marvel is after, since this is a solo venture for them. And, of course, since Thor is just another preamble to The Avengers, I would expect a ton of action to help build interest in that film, for whatever it's worth.

*Sigh*....I hope this works.
