Johnny Depp Gets Drawn Into Animated Movie
Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 10:04PM
There have certainly been plenty of rumors about
Johnny Depp
being cast in movies lately. Here's one we can confirm: Depp has signed on to
voice the title character in Rango, reuniting him with his
Pirates of the Caribbean director,
Gore Verbinski.
According to
Variety, Verbinski came up with the concept - a
household pet going on an adventure to discover his true self - and then turned
the idea over to
John Logan, who has written the script. This is
Verbinski's first voyage into animation; he has also directed The Mexican,
The Weather Man, and The Ring, in addition to all three Pirates
flicks. Oh, and Mousehunt.
For this animated adventure, the director will once
again call upon Industrial Light and Magic; ILM created the unsettling octopus
face for Davy Jones in Pirates.
Verbinski says the film will employ cutting-edge
animation techniques that "will allow us to capture and translate every aspect
of Johnny's performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a
way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature."
The film is scheduled for a March 2011 release, which is
bad news for fans of
Bioshock. Verbinski and Logan are working on
that adaptation as well, but Variety reports that will be made first,
while Bioshock is still in the development phase.
