Friday, September 12, 2008 at 2:03PM Fox to Bring Back Daredevil, Order More X-Men Spin-Offs?
In a recent article dissecting a terrible summer for Fox
- its "hits" were What Happens in Vegas and The Happening -
Variety discussed some factors that led to the
soft performance over the past few months and some changes the studio might
implement to keep it from happening again.
Among the options: More
X-Men spin-offs.
It's tough to look at the performance of that trilogy
and not think, purely from a business standpoint, that more X-Men movies might
benefit Fox. We know we're going to have
Wolverine next summer (which was
supposed to be this summer, by the way), and
Magneto is still a go. Will Fox
wait to see how those movies do before moving forward with a possible Deadpool
movie and a young X-Men flick? There might not be time for that; Fox needs some
answers now. After all, this summer they only made about $250 million on all of their
films combined here in the U.S. That's not getting it done.
Another option appears to be resurrecting
Daredevil.
While I know a lot of people who are overly familiar with the comic book may
think this is a great idea, there are so many superhero movies around these days
that going backwards may not bowl over enough moviegoers to be worth the
trouble.
I think Daredevil is a great character and deserves
another shot. However, if this is about generating revenue, can this property
win over ticket buyers who hated the first movie? Why not just wait three weeks
for a sequel to a superhero movie they liked or a new superhero movie
altogether? I'm not sold that this idea would stick.
Am I alone on this? I'm all in favor of more X-Men
spin-offs, and in fact, I think that's the only way to justify all those damn
characters that were underused in the trilogy. I also believe they're starting
with the two correct origin stories in Wolverine and Magneto. Deadpool could
also be a really solid option; that one, we expect, would keep
Ryan Reynolds
in the starring role. The young X-Men
thing is not a very good idea, in my opinion, at least not at this point, and Daredevil will probably be a
repeat of the Hulk. There's really no difference in the box office numbers from
the first Hulk movie to the second, and it got better reviews and had Edward
Norton.
Let's hear your thoughts. And if they do remake
Daredevil, who's the blind guy this time? I've heard Jason Statham is interested. Surely we can do better than that. And please don't vote for Johnny Depp.
Thank you.

I am all for more X-Men. Daredevil, not so much...
x-men, sure.
daredevil?! WTH?!
i think it's time they looked at the phantom or the rocketeer! oooo yeh!
My oddball choice for a film: "Justice"
One of the old "New Universe" titles by Marvel
I saw nothing wrong with the original Daredevil. In fact, it was better than the first Spider-Man. I know most of the hate for the movie is a predisposed hatred for Ben Affleck, but get over it and really watch it. The story is sold, the action is good, and it develops the characters well. I'm up for a sequel, but there is no need for a remake. Hell, throw him into Spidey 4.
I meant solid, not sold.
Daredevil deserves a remake. His character was destroyed in the previous movie. Although, i know DD is not the best character to generate revenue he has great stories interesting villains; way better than Whiplash in Iron Man 2.
