Sunday, September 14, 2008 at 6:34AM Joseph Gordon-Levitt Denies He's In 'Akira' Remake
When I read earlier in the year that
Leonardo DiCaprio
was going to produce and possibly have a role in
a live-action version of the manga/anime classic
Akira, my first thought ran along the lines of, "Oh, they
better be careful."
If the passion we've seen here at The Big Picture from
Dragonball fans is any indication, a live-action
Akira will have zero margin for
error. The fact is, most fans would rather they left it alone, and those
devotees of Akira that think producing a Hollywood cash-in remake is worth the
effort have already questioned DiCaprio in the title role.
MTV caught up with another one of Akira's
proposed stars,
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, soon to appear as Cobra Commander in
G.I.
Joe. He told the cable channel that used to have something to do with music
videos that he has zero involvement with the film.
That's right; for months, we've believed that Gordon-Levitt
would be Tetsuo in the live-action remake, but he insists that's not true.
"That just goes to show what you can believe about what
people write about movies," he asserts. "I love the movie Akira. I still
have yet to read the manga, but that’s really just a rumor. They don’t have a
script or anything.”
Sadly, I think I'd be looking forward to Joseph Gordon-Levitt
in that movie, although I'm not sure how much I would otherwise be anticipating
it. He didn't say he wouldn't be in the movie, just that it's too early in the
process to even think about that.
