Tobey Maguire's Record-Shattering Deal for the Next 'Spider-Man' Sequels

With great power comes a great big fat check.

Spider Man 4 and 5 will be happening, and to prove it, Sony done backed the truck up to Tobey Maguire's place. Maguire will receive a record $50 million salary plus profit shares from the two films, according to the Times of London.

The check is only part of the sweet deal. Maguire reportedly wouldn't sign any contract, no matter how lucrative, unless there was a clause allowing him "family time" with his 22-month-old daughter, Ruby Sweetheart. That's right: Family time.

Just about a month ago, the winds started picking up about more Spider-Man movies, but Sony did have an alternate list of actors if Maguire passed. In the end, all it cost Sony was more money than they made back on this summer's Made of Honor, plus early mornings and evenings off for the main character.

We don't know yet if Kirsten Dunst will return - and I'm not sure too many people are all that concerned - but the Times says an announcement should be made in the next few days. The first of the two films, which will be shot back-to-back over a six-month period next year, will be released in 2011.

Sam Raimi is back on board, and I'm curious if his deal broke the bank, too. Four or five movies in, though, is Tobey Maguire worth $50 - $100 million for this franchise? Would they not be enormous hits if Sony had balked at the deal and went out and hired one of the Jonas brothers for five million? OK, that's a bad example, but I guess my question is this: Is Tobey Maguire really irreplaceable?
