Matthew McConaughey on Captain America: "My Favorite Was the Hulk"
Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at 4:10PM
It's been a quiet week in superheroville, be it Gotham
or Metropolis or wherever. But there is one rumor that took a slightly
unexpected turn when
Matthew McConaughey talked to
MTV.
He was promoting his new film
Surfer, Dude, but the subject quickly turned to
the chatter this summer that The Shirtless One would defend our honor as
Captain
America.
Hearing he had been rumored for the role came as a
surprise to McConaughey. "I was?" he asked. McConaughey added that he "wasn’t a
big comic book reader, but that’s a super cool name - Captain America."
Without adding whether or not he was interested in the
project, which is going to need a star pretty soon, McConaughey instead started
rambling about the one comic book hero he did know about as a kid, The
Incredible Hulk, noting that while that ship has sailed in terms of movie
adaptations, it still holds a special place in his heart. A heart that beats
inches below the surface of a neatly shaved chest.
"Lou
Ferringo would come on, and it was an hour show, [so] you knew he was
gonna turn green [and] get big, two times in that hour," said McConaughey. "So
at 7:22 you knew he’d do it, and at 7:39 you knew he’d do it...so if you were
going to go make a milkshake or something, you better be back by 7:22 or 7:39,
’cause he was about to turn green."
Exactly, Matthew. You nailed the entire dramatic arc of the character. Thanks for your input.
Back to Captain America for a second. I loved the idea of Will Smith, even though it was clearly against the grain. If we're keeping with a more traditional approach, I thought Aaron Eckhart would be good. I know, I know - too much of a connection with DC Comics because of The Dark Knight, but he'd be perfect.

My wife has a serious crush on McConaughey. Honestly, he has the fact for Captain America, but I don't see him as a good choice.
