Nicole Kidman Discovers 'Eighth Wonder'

Less than a week after being named the biggest siphon in Hollywood, sucking movies dry with her expensive contracts, Nicole Kidman has...signed another contract. She'll star in and co-produce a new action-adventure movie at Fox called The Eighth Wonder.

Despite her recent well-publicized box office slump, Fox is releasing Kidman's new movie with Baz Luhrman, and from what I gather, the studio is very excited about Australia. Perhaps they sense a change in her fortunes.

She'll be working from a script by Simon Kinberg, and he hasn't written a movie yet with a modest budget, so we should probably expect the same thing here, especially since The Hollywood Reporter compares it to the Jason Bourne of Indiana Jones movies. Kidman and Kinberg have a history; he wrote Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and for a while she was going to star in that. After she moved on because of scheduling conflicts, Nic and Simon put together plans to make a spy movie. That one never boiled. So now for their next trick: The Eighth Wonder.

Kinberg's a very busy guy these days, having just punched up the script to the new Night at the Museum sequel. He also adapted the script for Sherlock Holmes, and he's working on a new version of Robert Ludlum's The Osterman Weekend, which would be a valuable remake because they didn't quite get it right the first time.

As for Kidman, I think she's gotten a raw deal in some respects. She's always gone after very experimental indie projects, like Birth and Dogville. But her blockbusters have been downright lousy since she won an Oscar - Stepford Wives, Bewitched, and The Invasion. If Australia redeems her, then a big, splashy, popcorn movie could be just the ticket to help her career fully rebound.
