Tom Cruise Is Out...of the New 'Shrek' Movie

cruise23a.jpgEarlier this month Cinema Blend reported that Tom Cruise was being mentioned for a role in Shrek Goes Fourth, and that he was likely to play the villain in the animated flick.

Today, Cruise has quashed the rumors, thanks to a brief comment by his representative, Jeff Raymond. "As of today, there is no truth to the Tom Cruise-Shrek 4 rumor," Raymond tells E! News. That's it; that's all you get.

Because he's a mouthpiece for Tom Cruise, Jeff Raymond sure must say no a lot. Very few stars have to deflect as much as often as Cruise.

But even that statement is a bit enigmatic; what's this "As of today" business? Was he attached and he's not now? Was he never attached but hopes to be? Or is it just a poor choice of words?

DreamWorks has not yet commented, but Camp Cruise seems to want to put this rumor to rest. But I would think this would be exactly the kind of exposure Cruise would need now, being attached to a movie guaranteed to make money; he hasn't been around one of those for a few years.

Strangely, because of his Tropic Thunder cameo, he's probably had the best summer of anyone linked to Shrek Goes Fourth. Diaz did OK with her Vegas movie, but Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers took two of the worst critical beatings all year with Meet Dave and The Love Guru.
