After 11 years apart, they're finally back together: The
King of the World and...um...the director's wife.
Yes,
Leonardo DiCaprio and
Kate Winslet,
who probably should've asked for more cash on the back end of Titanic, will
reunite in
Revolutionary Road, a drama directed by
Winslet's hubby,
Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to
Perdition).
Amazingly enough, this book has never been filmed,
despite winning first-time author Richard Yates a nomination for National Book
Award in 1962. It's not a stretch to say that this movie looks at similar cracks
in the facade of the American Dream that power American Beauty. "If my
work has a theme, I suspect it is a simple one: that most human beings are
inescapably alone, and therein lies their tragedy," declared Yates in 1999.
April and Frank Wheeler are ordinary suburbanites in the 1950s...and that's
exactly the problem.
Here's a new poster for the film from
IMP Awards,
and I think it tells us everything we need to know. It's uncluttered, probably
not too memorable in the grand scheme of things, but it's certainly a good match
for the movie, based on what I know.
Revolutionary Road opens December 19th.
Incidentally, you can't help thinking that eventually Kate or Leo will win an
Oscar. Winslet already has five nominations at age 32 and DiCaprio has three at
age 33. Incidentally, Mendes is one-for-one, winning Best Director for
American Beauty.

I don't think Yates was saying much about his themes in 1999--he died 7 years earlier.
