New Images from Frank Miller's 'The Spirit'

If there was a loser at this year's Comic Con in San Diego, it had to be Frank Miller's adaptation of the Will Eisner comic, The Spirit. According to most reports, the footage shown was not terribly compelling, at least when compared to some of the slam dunks of the geekfest, like Watchmen and Terminator. I'd take that with a grain of salt, though, because a lot of the stuff I read sounded the exact same, as if there was some push to do a little buzzkill job on The Spirit.

The first trailer's nothing special, it's true, and there is that whole "Why does this look exactly like Sin City" feeling you get in your gut, but the cast is pretty good, the source material is worth a movie treatment, and Frank Miller has experience with both film and comics, so he seems to be a pretty good choice to direct it. I would've preferred another collaboration, though, if only because, as is obvious, it looks exactly like Sin City. Eisner's comic has more than three colors, actually. So that could be a tad troublesome.

Still, forgetting for a moment that this might not be what we thought it would be a year ago, these new production photos, courtesy of Empire and MovieWeb, are working overtime. I particularly like the Sarah Paulson shots, so I'll lead with those.

In addition to Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendes, Paz Vega (whom we had not yet seen in photos for this project), and Paulson, The Spirit also co-stars Scarlett Johansson, and Jaime King. Look for it in theaters on Christmas.
