Jerry Reed: 1937 - 2008

Multiple Grammy-winning musician and part-time actor Jerry Reed has died from emphysema at the age of 71. Reed is perhaps best known for his role as Cledus "Snowman" Snow in the three Smokey and the Bandit movies and a spate of really kitschy novelty songs like "She Got the Goldmine, I Got the Shaft," "When You're Hot You're Hot," and "Amos Moses."

However, there's no denying the 70s country rock schmaltz appeal of "East Bound and Down," a hit Reed wrote and recorded for the first Bandit flick. Even though he was one of the first Nashville celebrities to pop up in Hollywood in the 1970s, Reed knew where his bread was buttered and in an interview from ten years ago, he admitted not being a very good actor. "I used to watch people like Richard Burton and Mel Gibson and think, `I could never do that.' When people ask me what my motivation is, I have a simple answer: Money."

You could also check out Reed's appearances on screen in movies as varied as Gator and The Waterboy, in which he played Coach Red Beaulieu.

Despite his goofy personality, Reed was a pretty damn terrific guitar player, and in fact, maybe it's because of his demeanor that his virtuosic playing takes a back seat in most people's minds. But check out this old clip of Reed tearing up a tune called "Lightning Rod."

And just because, here's Reed's guest stint on Scooby Doo, performing "Pretty Mary Sunlight." Awesome!

You'd think the animators would've at least filled all the seats in the arena. If I were the guest star, I'd be livid. Regardless, I dig me some Jerry Reed, so I'm sorry to see him go.

Riding through GA last week with my Dad (79) we listened to Jerry sing "Amos Moses" and laughed about all the good songs. We'll miss our GA song bird and a great guitar player. Thanks for all the laughs, we'll miss you Jerry.

I just want to say it was such much fun working with Jerry on the "Smokey and the Bandit" movie #1 along with Sally Field and Burt Reynolds. It was so much fun being around him and his other friends as well. I did have his home address in Nashville, however all my files and medical records were burn in a house fire I had in 2003. When my client who does a Patsy Cline look-a-like and sounds exactly like her. When she asked me to come to Nashville for a concert she had and what a lot of people to show up and who other than shows up?? Jerry shows up and he and I talked for the longest ever ever that is when I saw Jerry last.

Well Jerry from my family we will miss you A LOT!!! May God Bless you and your family

I hung out with Jerry about 20 years ago at the World Congress Center during the Hall of Fame show. Jerry was totally cool, and bummed several cigarettes off of me. He was a nice man, and one helluva musician/songwriter. I'm very sad to hear of his passing.

Me, my sisters and my brother were raised on Jerry Reed's music. The news has only just filtered across the pond that he's gone. The end of an era for one of the best guitar players/singers every. We'll celebrate his life this weekend by getting together, drinking some beer and playing his music. Rest in Peace.

Our prayers and condolences go out to the Reed family. I was shocked to hear of his passing at a relatively young age nowdays. I just watched one of his movies( High-Ballin') just a few days ago. I've always liked his music and especially his guitar playing. R.I.P. Jerry, we all enjoyed your time with us.
